2010 Season: April 24th - Round 3

|
Another very nice long weekend for football and didn't the 3A team take advantage with an 8 goal haul at the Kingsford Smith ground.
Three wins, four losses and a draw is a fair result from the club for those interested in results. For those interested in reading between the lines Jock from the 2R team has added a further chapter to the team's developing story.
A delay to this week's report due to a web site upgrade and we will be back on track next week.
See you next week.

Match Summary
Over 35s Division 4A Men
Finally, a good win, 2 – 0. A great Team effort all round, with a truly dominant display, highlighted by Mark in goal having so little to do, and even fitting in a couple of cat-knaps. Well done to Richard who brought his partner along as she is expecting a baby today, and showed off by scoring 2 great goals. Perhaps you should bring her every week, Richard.
Thanks to Steve Green for flying down from Singapore to get his football fix.

Featured Match Report - 2Rs
26th April 2010
Koola 2
STM 3 North Sydney AA 1
Goal scorers:
Middleton 1, Hughes 1, Goodman 1.
"This position will be held and the section will remain here until relieved. The enemy cannot be allowed to interfere with the program. If the section cannot remain here alive, it will remain here dead. Should any man through shellshock or other cause attempt to surrender, he will remain here dead. Should all guns be blown out the section will use Mills grenades and other novelties. Finally, the position, as stated, will be held"

A defensive error can leave a nasty taste.

..... or General Goodman's pre-game speech went something like that with the ANZAC spirit still in the air.
Little did the St Michaels troops know precisely what sort of a fight was on the cards as they took the field.
In fact, the first half was really the calm before the proverbial storm. First 10 mins a bit of thrust and parry (more on the latter later) as the combatants battled for field position. Finally, the first in a series of decisive strikes as Corporate Cottle found Private Kearney's head and on to Lieutenant Middleton who put one behind enemy lines.
Within 10 minutes - 2 further decisive strikes. First Captain Hughes fired one home with a shot brilliantly taken. Then Colonel Smith found his General unmarked in the centre of the pitch and the General made no mistake. As the bullet sailed past the last line of defence the death cry could be heard of a keeper badly beaten.
Meanwhile, the core of St Michaels troops were rock solid at the back. Superbly marshalled by Brigadier Fitzgerald, 2nd Lieutenant Smith, Sergeant Baker and Officer Bineham defused all attempts by the swift footed attackers to raid home territory.
But wait - one finally breaks the wall and we all turn to see if Sergeant Sayle can save the day again - but he's deserted (ok - only temporarily!!) and is nowhere to be seen. Never fear - the incredibly safe hands of Sergeant Major Walters put all at ease as another wave of attack is repelled.
The second half begins as St Michaels looks for the telling blow to bring this battle to an end. Alas, a ridiculous decision leaves our brains trust debating a tactical response on half way as the enemy sneaks in behind the usual impenetrable fortress and fires one home. 3-1 and some ANZAC spirit is called for.
The turning point arrives shortly thereafter. Sergeant Major Walters learns a new rule of battle (the parry rule) the hard way and the wall is built. Five of our finest stand shoulder to shoulder not 9 metres away from some serious gun fire. But stand firm they do and the decisive shot is sprayed well wide. Arm to arm combat then results as first Captain Hughes then 2nd Lieutenant Smith go head to head with 2 of the more hot headed enemy. This only serves to fire up the rest of the St Michaels army and
"..... the position as stated is held"
3-1 victory
