Season 2010 Round 4
Training
Specialist Goalkeeper and Football Elite training starts this week. Can I suggest to all coaches that you stick close to your trainers and pick up on their wealth of experience? You won't have the same pressure on you to learn that the players have, and you'll be able to gain a whole range of hints and tips to help them when the training finishes. The idea is to transfer the skills from the professionals to you.
Photo of the Week is waiting for your entry. Each week we'll publish the best. Have a go! Send them to contactus@stmichaelssoccer.com. We want to build a library of photos we can use for a variety of reasons, so please don't hold back - send them NOW.

Match Report of the Week will be chosen by the unbiased editor - based on whatever the heck he feels is right. Last week's was brilliant. Who is next? While we are at it, try not to name every player every week in the report. We know you love 'em all, but try to spread the highlights as everyone will have them, but not every week. It makes for a better read anyway.
The face of a Champion!
Yes, this man might look like just your average Over 35 footballer, but there is more, much more to him than meets the eye. Ladies & Gentlemen it gives me great pride to introduce the Inaugural GDSFA Poker Champion: Alex Melching!
Alex fought his way through multiple rounds and mounting pressure to be crowned Individual Champion on Saturday night at the Ettamogah Pub in a fundraising exercise Granville ran to raise money for Youth Football.
If that wasn't enough the Knights also won the Team Prize, completing a clean sweep and heralding the same results we are expecting on the football field; Club Champions and Individual Champions.
Alex, you have set a high standard, but I am sure you've inspired us all, from Skills through to Seniors to:
Go Hard
Go Proud
Go Knights!
Your Committee Invites You to attend the next Meeting at Bella Vista Clubhouse at 7.30pm on Monday 10th May. We would particularly love input from Age Managers and anyone else who sees something amiss. We are open to whatever ideas can improve our club.

Match Reports - Juniors
8 Green v North Rocks
Score 11 - 3
It's amazing what happens when everyone follows the coaches instructions and puts into practice what they learn at training. Crosses towards goal (and our frequently offside forwards) led to many scoring opportunities, with Liam scoring his first for the season.
Our defence was a lot more organised this week, with Joshua chasing hard out back, regularly cutting off the opposition's attacking raids. Next week we'll have to try and break our LWLW trend.
Goals: Myah (2), Robert (2), Liam, William (6)
Knight of the Round: Liam
Encouragement Award: Joshua
9/2 v Merrylands
Score 1 - 2
Light rain greeted the team at Merrylands which made for a slippery surface. Thankfully the supporters were able to keep dry in an impressive new grandstand. On the pitch the boys played a fantastic first half. Jackson was great in goals whilst Brendan scored a nice goal and we led 1-0 at oranges. Unfortunately we didn't have our minds switched on for the second half and gave away a couple of goals. The boys continued to work hard to create chances but the Merrylands defence stood strong and we couldn't get an equaliser. Even though we didn't get the result it was a very exciting game and everyone played their best despite the conditions. I reckon we'll "get 'em next time" on home soil.
Knight of the Round : Brendan
Encouragement Award : Jackson
10/2 v Wenty Waratah Black
Score 0 - 0
Best positional game of the season, the team is starting to gel as a unit and had the majority of the territory today. Unfortunately unable to turn the possession into goals. Well done to Jackson & Hamish on today's awards.
10/3 v Parramatta United
Score 4 - 0
Because the opposition had conceded goals in all of their previous matches their strategy was to stack their backline.
The result was a messy "u/5" type spectacle that chocked our attacking flair. Our response was solid and we eventually went to half time 1 goal up - due to a deflection off one of their numerous defenders.
The game opened up in the second half due to solid passing and good positional play. We created numerous opportunities converting 3 of them. Most pleasing was the power at which our shots at goal were made, all of the goals were hit with such power that they were unstoppable.
Well done all!
10/5 v Ermington
Score 1 - 1
Knights played Ermington in the best and most evenly matched game of the round so far. The game started with wet weather but the team soon settled into an attacking play with the majority of the game played in front of Ermington’s goal.
Sina made his debut for the team and displayed great potential both in defense and up front. Adam started the game in goals making some excellent saves. Second half saw him part of the attacking play.
Knight of the Round this week is Josh K who had his best game of the season, directing play and being in the right place at the right time.
Cameron was a keen as ever and had a run as striker; he was very unlucky not to score on several occasions. Cameron also combined with Luke in the first half who played a very consistent game in both attack and defense and it was Luke’s cross that set up our goal by Jordan. Josh H displayed a brilliant left foot along with some great attacking play and also had many attempts at goal. Second half saw Josh H in goal and facing a penalty from which we escaped thanks to every player being back and defending hard.
Coach Tracey trialled some new positions this week with William playing in the backline along with Jordan and Alex. These boys all held their positions well in the first half with William doing some great clearing kicks. Jackson and Jason also played in different roles during the game. Jason combining well with Cameron, and Jackson seeming to prefer the defensive role.
Following a pep talk at half time the team worked on some good ball passing and team work with Dheeraj and Liam strengthening the mid field and keeping the play again in front of Ermington’s goal. Both boys had several shots at goal. Nathan played a solid second half running hard in defense and showing great attacking play to earn the Encouragement Award for this week.
Final score in a nail bitting game St Michaels 1 - Ermington 1
Knight of the Round – Joshua K
Encouragement award – Nathan
All boys demonstrated great sportsmanship at the end of the game, Well Done Team!
11/2 v Parramatta City
Score 2 - 2
Pre-game expectations of a close game soon came to fruition after the opening minutes where it was evident that the opposition was arguably the strongest to be faced by our boys this season.
Parramatta opened the scoring mid way in the first half and appeared to be more urgent on and around the ball than we were. Fortunately it wasn't long after that where Brent managed to get a ricochet off a defender's leg to level the score at 1 all.
In the first half Will was very busy in the middle thwarting many attacks as was Brent. Matty tried his heart out but his speed was countered by similar speed by the opposition defender. Julian as usual displayed touches of brillance and Dylan and Daniel had some good touches.
Garry's attempt to inspire the boys at the break appeared to be working as we started the second half with more enthusiasm and we were attacking their goal with more determination. Within 10 minutes or so into the half a handball by an opposition player saw Garrick at the penalty box and with calmness and ease he drilled the ball to right corner of the net to give us a 2-1 lead.
The mood of the game took a further swing and Parramatta's constant attack was rewarded with a goal to level the game at 2 a piece. Had it not been for Brady's tenacity to defend and defuse attacks I am sure we would have been down by a few more goals. With only minutes remaining what seemed to be a certain goal loomimg turned out to be a great save by our keeper Ashley who also gave us great clearance from goal all game.
An exciting game to watch and I am sure the players and parents will look forward to the next encounter against Parramatta.
11/5 Black v Baulkham Hills
Score 2 - 1
Playing Baulkham Hills saw a lot of skills and talents by our soccer stars. Our players dominated the first half of the match. Jack our goalie saving an attempt at goal. Bianca was impressive in defence clearing the ball and tackling BH with great force. Hazza hassled and frustrated the BH players. The first half saw many attempts at goal, Harry was unlucky with a left footed shot, Chris was close but the ball scraped past the nets, Ryan passed the ball to Silas who was unlucky in his attempt, however Ryan made another great pass to Mitchell and Mitchell was able to put the ball into the back of the net. James B is like the Duracell bunny he never stops.
The second half of the game was dominated by action of a different kind – parental involvement came to the forefront. A crazed mother dominated the 2nd half as she was yelling abuse at her own son – who was lying “unconscious” …… on the field. After a spear tackle Harry was unable to get up, the crazed mother (me) yelled out to her son “come on, get up, stop milking it…..” Harry was taken off the field and we all watched with baited breath as his replacement Mitchell took a direct free kick. BH formed a wall to stop the shot, unfortunately a BH player tried to deflect the shot with his hand. The whistle blew and this time a penalty shot was called. Tension mounted further as Hazza prepared to take the penalty. He scored and the team was really excited. Harry perked up then, wishing it was him. The team let their guard down and unfortunately BH scored with the final result 2-1. It was a great game.
The Knight of the Round went to Chris and the Encouragement award to Ryan. The inaugural Ronaldinho award for miraculous recovery goes to Harry.
12/4 v Winston Hills
Score 2 - 0
Our first home match for the season saw the debut of our two new recruits, Caleb and Alesha, to take on Winston Hills.
The overcast first half was tough going and scoreless, with the Knights having plenty of opportunities but frustratingly failing to convert them. In fact, we may well have been down at the break but for a great reflex save by Zach B.
In the second half the sky brightened and so did the play. The Knights built good pressure, including Ben unluckily hitting the post off a solid cross. Eventually good teamwork put Caleb in the clear and he blasted one home. He followed this a short time later with a long individual run into the goal mouth and a push past the keeper for his second.
Alex, James and Zach B were excellent in defence, with Alex in particular defusing many a Winsto raid.
Knight of the Round: Caleb on debut
Encouragement Award: Jeremy (aka "Bruce")
13/4 v Wentworthville Uniting
Score 6 - 1
After last week's tough game away it was good to be back home with our full squad. Wenty had posted a few good results coming into this game and the boys faced a challenge.
James stepped into goalie and showed great promise, putting his body on the line a few times; Dinesh was back and devastatingly bagged a hat-trick; Jacob S scored one, but if he had brought his radar it could have been plenty more; Andrew scored a cracker and James (encouragement award) capped off a good all round game with a nice goal.
Good result. I was very happy with the second half where there was some good support play and passing.
Knight of the round: Alex, who made the run of the year using his skill to leave the opposition floundering and nearly scoring.
14/2 v Auburn FC
Score 0 - 0
Today's effort was a great improvement on our last outing. James G toughed it out and played goalie with a sore ankle and did a great. Liam is Mr Versatile and filled in superbly at left back. Midfield showed some nice touches and passing, especially between Daniel & Alex. Ashleigh made her presence felt with some bruising tackles. The game was end to end and both teams had chances so a 0-0 scoreline was probably a fair result.
Congratulations to this week's award winners James G & Liam. Well done everyone, although we did not win this was our best team performance so far and something to build on for our next game.

Featured Match Report
Hi All,
Just to confirm that the 12/4 team now has 12 registered players, so we won’t be needing anyone to play up for us again unless a couple of our regulars aren’t available for some reason.
Big thanks to you and your teams’ parents for their help and support over the first few weeks, which has helped us get off to a strong season start and seemed to be a lot of fun for the boys concerned.

Cheers,
Scott Webb
Team Manager 12/4
Editor: THAT'S WHAT I'M TALKIN' ABOUT! GREAT ATTITUDE FROM ALL THE U11's

Match Reports - Seniors
Senior 8 v Baulkham Hills
Score 1 – 0
Still undefeated, but it was a close one. After the whistle has blown and the 3 points have been won, everyone can smile and pat each other on the back and say “great game boys!” The truth is, however, another story.
It was quite difficult to enjoy this because it felt like the two teams had different rules and agendas. The goodies were out there to win the ball with their boots, heads and hearts. The baddies came straight from their ‘theatre sports’ rehearsal, throwing their bodies on the ground, pleading with outstretched hands and crying out in indignation whenever anyone else won the ball. It really felt frustrating to have so many distractions from the real game…and the tactics were effective for the most part as our team missed some sitters and have not had as many penalties awarded against them in the whole season (trials included).
The only goal awarded in the game was scored by Jimmy in the first half, thank goodness, and you’d think that meant it was uneventful. St Michaels appeared to be the most skillful and definitely the quietest, apart from yelling instructions at each other in their cool execution. Good fortune went our way finally when a controversial save by Chad kept the baddies scoreless (a similar save years ago went against this team and they lost a knock-out clash. Your faithful match reporter is unmoved by any doubts - and possesses a loooong memory). Either way, the unpunished ribald language from the opposition to the 8’s and to their “youthful” mothers is worth a goal.
Generally it’s affirming to have outlasted and outclassed an older, bigger, wilier bunch of thespians. It was tough, it was ugly, it was ironic (youngest player was the only card on the park), but guys; A WIN IS A WIN and the good guys WON!!
