Under the Weather

We've had a rough week, with many games cancelled, and some people's moods matching the weather. All Training is cancelled for this week, in the hope we can assist the grounds to recover for matches this weekend. There are NO EXCEPTIONS to this. There are serious consequences if a player is injured at unapproved training, and our insurance will not assist if it were to happen. Individuals who put themselves and players at risk by not complying with Council closures, or our club ruling to close grounds are likely to hold themselves personally liable for medical costs if a player under their charge is hurt.

Just ask Ken Fitzgerald how easy this is to do. He broke his leg in a fairly innocuous challenge this week. All our wishes for a speedy recovery go to Ken.

Additionally, your Editor was involved in hearing an appeal for at the Judiciary for a Club that had been KICKED OUT OF THE COMPETITION FOR THE REST OF THE YEAR due to 4 people (players, officials or spectators) from both teams being involved in a pushing and shoving incident that resulted in one punch. I suggest you check Granville's Zero Tolerance policy for violence at www.granvillesoccer.com.au, remind yourself this is a game, and when baited or provoked follow the only rule that matters - WALK AWAY, then score a goal.

Special Needs Soccer Announcement

Special Needs Soccer Program

This year (2010) Baulkham Hills St Michael’s Knights and Granville & Districts Soccer Football Association (GDSFA) is starting a sports program aimed at children aged up to 15 who have an intellectual disability. A set of rules has been developed to provide one-on-one guidance to the participants as they play. Each player will be allowed to have a chaperone on the field to assist and direct the player. It is hoped that once familiar with the play the player will become less dependent on the chaperone until able to play independently. Players will be guided through professional training provided by the coaches of Football Elite.

Players wishing to register use the same registration forms as other players and choose "Special Needs" rather than their particular age group. For more information contact Craig Gough president@stmichaelssoccer.com or call 0418 964 928

Match Reports - Juniors

8 Red v Rouse Hill Rams WHT

Score 7 – 0

The first game of the 2nd round was a rather cool affair, but that was just the weather ... ‘cause the boys were on fire!!! It was a thoroughly entertaining game. We began in great form with lots of great passing, keeping the ball wide and all players keeping to position. Goal scorers were Samuel (2) Harry (2) Scott (2) and Joshua (1), with great passing from Zachary in the centre. Strong defensive play by Lee and Aaditva on the back line kept the opposition scoreless. Scott, Harry and Joshua all had their best game of the season. Overall, a good team effort and positional play starting to show.

U8 Green v Castle Hill United Red

Score 0 – 12

I was wondering why it looked like there were Castle Hill players everywhere, then I realised not only were we one player short, but Castle Hill had one too many players on the field. Ref! Castle Hill had one player that proved the difference between the teams.

We had 4 clear chances we couldn't convert, including one with great passing between William and Sarah. Sarah and Liam saved countless chances as goalie. I'd be surprised if Liam doesn't have bruises on his shins after all his saves.

10/2 v CASTLE HILL UNITED WHT

Score 1 – 0

It was sweet revenge and bragging rights to the Knights, a real confidence booster to the boys! Up against their arch rival from Castle Hill the boys played superbly in trying conditions to overcome their nemesis. This was the team the 9/3's went down to in last years GF and a team full of schoolmates for the rest of the team.

Lewis and his backline once again kept a cleansheet, Jackson was dynamic in the mid-field shutting down and setting up play, Ryan and Ijaz were beating the opposition with pace up front with great passing to set up the team’s goal. All in all though it was a team performance and each player played a part in the win.

11/5 Blk v Auburn FC

Score 0 – 3

It was a wet and rainy day and we had to play the second placed Auburn FC without the help of Harry, Jai and Calvin, so we called on young Luke Kennedy to help out. All were keen for a tough game. From the kickoff it was clear we would have to defend tirelessly today. With Bianca leading from the back, she showed us all how to play fullback, they didn’t stop coming at her and she kept sending them back and when they did get past she chased them down - never giving up. We still managed to force the play back to their half consistently with Chris and Ryan making breaks and Silas outplaying his opponents through the middle. Daniel was able to have a great chance in the box. Only when a player was able to get free on our back post were they able to beat our defence and score and a mix up in front of our goal saw a second goal go in.

2-0 down at half time but our team was more determined than ever and took the game up to Auburn giving their defence plenty of work. Shaun up front looked to break and level the score, Mitchell at sweeper never let a breakaway play through, Hazza hassling and determined as always, and Jack showing he can play anywhere today, confusing the opposition whenever he got the ball. With both teams having chances it was Auburn who put an unstoppable shot in the net. The midfield were tireless. James K reading the play and picking up the lose ball, James B baffling the opposition and putting his body on the line going down with a kick to his ankle only to return to the game. Young Luke looked every bit a part of the team attacking well in the first, and solid in defence in the second half. Shaun and Ryan did a great job in goal - the most work they have had all year. Great effort. This is the loss we had to have.

Senior 9 v Castle Hill United

Score 4 – 3

Like a shot out of a cannon the Senior 9’s managed to score GOOAALLS!!! One + two + three from nowhere. Matt receives a through ball, breaks away and centres to beat the keeper for goal one. Joshua too receives a great ball from our champion keeper Tharindu (more about him later) beats his man, breaks away and sends the ball under the keeper and into goal. Adam goes for a loping run in mid-field, hears the call “send it!” and puts a mighty speculator to Josh who heads it to goal from about 15m out.

We weren’t dominating but managed to convert all three opportunities, unlike previous games where chances were squandered. Castle Hill were controlling possession by miles but our defence managed to scramble in time to defuse their attacking raids.

Tharindu saves a goal and not long after clears the ball of the line. Jamie also clears one off the line. St Michael’s were starting to panic as too much talking instead of marking was taking place.

Castle Hill goal 3 - 1 ….more panic……more wasted possession. Can we hold out?

Castle Hill goal 3 – 2….come on KNIGHTS, hold strong, stop wasting possession and counter….you deserve this win.

Shonoda on his angry pills breaks away on the right and beats his man with blistering speed. Like the Incredible Hulk he centres for Tereba. GOOAAL. St Michael’s lead 4 – 2….we’ve got some breathing space. Castle Hill GOAL….4 – 3….Can’t be much more time left….2 minutes later the whistle blows and YES a well deserved win. Great game Castle Hill. Great sporting spirit and an absolute pleasure to play against.

Match Reports - Seniors

Senior 7 v Kellyville

Score 6 - 3

The drought has finally broken!! And no, I don’t mean the rain drenching weather we have been experiencing lately.

It took 8 rounds to win our first game of the season and I am sure everyone must be thrilled… you see I wouldn’t really know because I missed the game unfortunately.

I received a text message from Coach Horne at 5pm on Saturday afternoon and it looked so much brighter than the previous 7.

From what I understand the Senior 7’s were lucky on the day as Kellyville were playing short some players… but that’s the way things go and we took advantage by putting 3 goals in first. Kellyville matched our goals by half time, but we doubled our score in the second half as the opposition were tiring and getting a little frustrated.

Steve scored 3 magnificent goals (I am sure his father will be pleased!), Justin scored 2 and Mitch put the icing on the cake with his goal.

I look forward to being at the game next week for 2 reasons, the first to see how the Senior 7’s confidence will carry them against Greystanes, and second, to allow me to write a match report with the benefit of being at the game!! Good work guys.

Senior 8 v Lidcombe Waratahs

Score 2 – 0

Cold & Wet. Finally! It’s the official soccer weather for the official soccer season.

We had many more slide tackles as a result this week, some intentional, most not. Peter had to step into the thankless role of referee, and after disallowing one of our goals and finding our own guys off-side multiple times was then accused after the match of being unfair (with a few rude words added to the accusation!) Meanwhile the Sideline Eye huddled calmly and comfortably under the Lowe Pavilion, supplied with hot refreshments provided by ‘Honorary Soccer Mum’ Robyn. No stress or swear words here!!

Play was fairly scrappy, the ball skidding and spinning inconsistently over wet grass and mud. In these greasy conditions no-one looked particularly impressive, but overall the good-guys had the game covered. Andy scored mid-way throught the first half and and we created numerous unsuccessful attempts on their nets, while our goalie was barely troubled.

The second half looked more promising for the Waratahs. They came close to scoring, only being thwarted by an inconveniently placed cross-bar (thank heavens, since the keeper wasn’t in sight).

Our second goal was the result of many passes and a long build-up, finished by Tim with five minutes remaining. Played in good spirit in difficult conditions (the shock of no canteen!), both goals happened while Cathy was watching, and that finally destroys the myth that they can’t score while she is concentrating on the game. The ladies, both young and slightly less young, remained cool and collected throughout, happy with another comfortable win.
