I've Got a Mate
In 1997 Andy joined St Michael’s with his mate. They were in the under 8’s, and took to ‘soccer’ with great enthusiasm. Their first Gala Day was spent at St Michael’s School and on that momentous day Princess Di came to grief in a French tunnel.
In ’98 Andy and his mate were joined by Stuart (closely related to your correspondent) who was another of Andy’s mates from school. There were two Under 9 teams at the time. The Jaguars, and the other team who were coached by Steve Williams (Ivan Stepic’s brother-in-law) and this was the beginning of my experience as a soccer mum! Initially I didn’t attend many games as Michael (in today’s U13’s) was only a few months old.
Meanwhile Stuart was hanging on every word of his coach, camping himself deep as left back, and then running up but teetering on the half-way line not cross it because that’s what he thought his coach had told him.
U10’s was coached by Bill Morris. He was like a guru to Stuart. He said ‘stay wide’, Stuart stayed wide – no questions asked. Andy and Stuart flourished under Bill. Ashley Morris, Bill’s son, would assist at training, and even became a referee, was an inspiration to our larrikin soccer-crazy boys. School was boring, learning was tough, homework was ‘crap’, but training and Saturday mornings were the best times of the week. St Michael’s, with its great culture of ‘soccer for the fun of it’, and ‘all in to build a great club’ was the best environment our families had experienced in sport. The hard-working volunteers like Ivan, John Estreich, Chris McLeay…the coaches who gave up family time whether they had experience as coaches or not, it was a great example.
Another son, David, started playing. Nobody was available to coach, so instead of the team breaking up, another son, Ben, stepped up. The colourful ‘soccer experience’ became even richer. Both these boys went on to do the ref’s course and spent many Saturdays at Bella Vista guiding the little ones around, and fending off sometimes overly irate parents who had lost the plot.
Back to the Piranhas, Andy and Stuart’s team. Whilst under the shadow of the more successful Jaguars, the Piranhas began to emerge as a competitive team, winning the President’s Cup. What excitement! The emerging ‘Marmee Army’ jumped and blew whistles through the last two full games before this knockout cup was won.
Too soon, it seemed at the time, Bill Morris left as his youngest son went on to another code. By this time the remarkable Andrew Horne had been coaching the ‘Barracudas’ for a year or two. Stu and Andy joined Andrew and a new bunch of mates started to play some very successful soccer. Premierships, President Cups…the titles fell. Playing here was so much fun we had other ‘mates’ lining up to join. In fact, so many were there that we had too many and this inspired recruitment drive meant we had 2 very competitive teams of 17 and 18 year olds. Thus the Titans were born.
Over the next few years it became apparent that the way the mainstream ‘football’ associations were coaching their players and running their comps was a lot more aligned with the rest of the world, and we were in a shrinking competition that wouldn’t adapt as we suggested. We had so many teams from the Knights competing against each other because we kept growing and our neighbours didn’t. We lost so many talented kids, and sometimes teams, that wanted to go another step higher that we had to do something.
Investigations were made, feelers put out, questions asked, debates held, public meetings called and eventually we were almost unanimously accepted into GDSFA. While we were too large for the Churches comp we were small fry in Granville.
Our first two years have been work intensive. A new constitution, grading of every player, educating coaches (including Stu and Andy who coached last year!), managers and even our spectators on new processes that mean the difference between a win and a forfeit, or a fine to the club. It has been busy.
Let’s get back to the mates again. Our second year in, under new coach David Littlejohns, the Snr 8’s (the old Titans) were undefeated until last week, but have managed to get into the Grand Final for the second year in a row. Overall, due to the hard work and humble, teachable people on our Committee we have 9 teams in the finals.
Nine teams! In a club which doesn’t actively recruit players from other clubs, has minimal facilities, finds their own sponsors, is coached by mums, dads, brothers and sons, and has a culture of seeing the game as a vehicle to grow people, not just a vehicle to win.
Next year we will have our first ever 15 year Continuous Service trophy awarded…to add another chapter to our story it will go to Andy…and then the following year to Stuart…and then…….
Manager Corner
Thanks for gettin the information in we needed for the Continuous Service Awards...................now..................can you please make sure you get the Coach to take 10 minutes to complete and return the Grading Sheet the Club Coach has sent them?

Match Reports
Senior 8 v Castle Hill United
Score 5 – 1
After last weeks “Please Explain?” loss (I was in Queensland, and we’ve all been a bit political lately so it made me think of it) and the awkward absence of our goalie due to a broken foot in the last round, it was with great anticipation that the ‘Marmee Army’ approached this fixture. Of course the boys now assure me it was a ‘done deal’. They would win and we had shown little faith in their abilities….yeah, yeah, right. That’s why the majority of the available players were ready an hour and a half before kick-off, why the local pubs closed early on Friday due to lack of patronage, and why the Littlejohns had blended a 44 gallon drum of highly sugared, electrolyte-laden, to-be-intravenously-fed liquid, all ready and consumed before the whistle blew. Where are the dunnies?
United have been our closest competition. With their skill, aggression, determination and size we had squeaked in a win following a controversial goal, and a draw after we relinquished a two to nil lead. Placed second, they were quite confident they could overcome us after we lost 3 – 1 to a fifth-placed team (who went onto the finals and have now ousted the third-placed team).
The first 15 minutes was painful to watch as bodies collided mid-air in a manner reminiscent of Israel Folau. It seemed that the Greens (CHU) constantly won the battle for the ref’s support. Yellow cards were awarded in dubious circumstances. In all we had three whilst the Greens just drew multiple cautions, sometimes to the same player. Maybe it is being the new kid on the block or perhaps United have earnt respect from the refs over their long association.
Anyway, referees aside, the Knights were not to be overcome today. Tim earnt the first accolades when he struck a free kick in the sweetest spot imaginable – it sailed gracefully over the wall and over the goalie into the top corner. His mum was so proud she had made the Gatorade to just the right concentration. Then, in a play that should have resulted in a penalty to us, the Greens capitalised and scored their first and only goal.
The second half was totally ours. In a beautiful display of team cooperation Nick ultimately crossed and was met by the confident boot of Andrew. 2 – 1 ‘We need another boyos’ screamed our Irish goalie. ‘OK’ was the response from our first half goalie Glenn, here’s a screamer into the top left corner. 3 – 1 The opposition goalie then thought he needed to shake hands with Andrew as he ran around him, resulting in a direct penalty sweetly taken by Stuart. 4 -1 Tim was still buzzing from his double strength Gatorade and finished off a messy goal-mouth scramble from a corner with his second. 5 – 1
But wait, there’s more. Chad took another direct penalty and almost, really, really, nearly scored his first ever. Still 5 – 1. The Green ‘unleaded’ Machine were running on empty. The smaller, lighter Knights were still on their toes and looking for opportunities…Andy corralled the ball and took a shot…6 – 1, only to be disappointed as the whistle had blown WHILE it was in flight, BEFORE it crossed the line. See you all in a fortnight for our second successive Grand Final.
10/2 v Baulkham Hills
Score 3 – 0
It was a windy morning on the open fields of The Hills Centenary Park where the 10/2's were preparing for the challenge against Baulkham Hills who had led the table for most of the season.
A few of the team started off with a 'sleepy' start and were put into gear with a gentle rev-up. The fast wide game the 10/2's play proved to be the right plan when Hamish showed some good skill down the left side, pushing the ball through to Ijaz who continued beating the Baulko challenge with a superb cross to Ryan who was able to find the net. This goal shook Baulko up and made them realize they were in for a game today, Ryan followed up shortly after giving him a 1st half double.
Although we were 2 nil up at half time, we could rest on our laurels and have found Baulko in the past to make a break the moment there is a lapse in concentration. To our team’s credit they were able to scramble where necessary and cover each attacking play from Baulko. Our keeper Lewis had his busiest game all season in goals and once again returned a clean sheet.
Following the half-time talk the team encountered the challenge from Baulko in the 2nd half and the 3 nil lead allowed, which allowed us to breathe a little easier came from a screamer from Oscar following an Ijaz corner. All in all it was a true team effort and the boys look forward to next week’s game against Merrylands.
11/5 BLK v Auburn FC
Score 0 – 3
A warm and windy day set the scene for a tense, exciting semi against the minor premiers. Inspired, by watching our 11/2s progress to their grand final by a penalty shootout, our Knights started on fire and Auburn were on the back foot. Showing ball control beyond our best all year and vision and passing to die for it was the cruellest of fates to have a goal scored against the run of play to be down 1-0 at half time.
However the Knights rallied and continued their raids, spending most of the game in the opposition half with so many attempts on goal but just couldn’t get it in. Again Auburn returned fire and, when one on one with our keeper, didn’t miss. Still, at 2-0 down we looked every chance of pulling it back but when Auburn put boot to ball from nearly half way the ball lobbed high and with luck on their side bounced perfectly over our keepers head and went in just under the crossbar. 3-0 and it looked over but to their credit our Knights kept charging but just couldn’t get thru.
Guys you could not have played better, it’s a cruel game sometimes and this was one of them.
Knight of the Round – Bianca, Chris, Calvin, Daniel, Hazza, Harry, Jai, Jack, James B, James K, Mitchell, Ryan, Shaun and Silas
12/4 v Auburn Districts
Score 2 – 1
Top of Form
An early start at an unfamiliar ground saw the Knights, placed 4th through the regular season, take on 3rd placed Auburn for the elimination final. So far this year we hadn't beaten Auburn, losing once and drawing twice, but we should have beaten them last time so we knew we were in with a chance.
The Knights exploded out of the blocks and were switched on and exerting pressure all over the ground, forcing their hapless opponents into panic and error. However, the pressure wasn't converting into goals until Caleb stepped up and took a free kick from well outside the box, which floated over the bamboozled goalie and into the net (validating the coach's decision to run away from the sun in the first half!).
It remained 1-0 at halftime with the Knights dominating across the ground. Zach P, Caleb and Ben were really effective up front and Alesha and Matthew were tireless. The backs were nigh impregnable as a unit and keeper Zach B returned with interest any action coming his way through some booming kicks.
Auburn fought back in the second half and forced a few goal kicks and corners but these were well defended and momentum began to swing back in favour of the Knights. A promising push forward by Caleb found Ben just off-side and then Alesha nearly snuck one over a napping keeper. Finally, Alex crossed from the left to find Zach P's left foot flicking the ball into the net for the two goal buffer we were looking for. The vocal crowd, led by Kylie and Denis, let the world know it too! Who needs vuvuzelas?
Auburn scored late from a penalty for accidental handball but too late to make a difference to the result. As the Coach had to depart quickly to see his other son play in his semi, there were no awards given, however, Ben played with enormous determination and skill, while Caleb's touches of class stood out in a wonderful team effort that proved the side is capable of going all the way this year.
Go Knights!
13/4 v Guildford County
Score 3 – 0
Oh, so the last game against the competition leaders was NOT a fluke, it had nothing to do with little Johnnie being grounded…..When these Knights play their natural game they are a treat to watch, and very hard to beat. The passing game is fluid, fast and selfless. Playing wide gives our goal-hungry fast forwards the room to move and plenty of scoring opportunities. The first goal, although an own-goal, was a result of pressure from James and Dinesh. Not long after, Dinesh repeated his trademark break and scored, and this came as the team ramped up the pressure, making the Guildford boys increasingly desperate to win ANY possession and make an impact. We just kept the ball away from them!
2 to nil at half-time, looking good…a week off was becoming a real possibility. The whistle blew, and Cameron shortly thereafter scored from Michael to Dinesh to Michael to Cameron interplay. Guildford was stunned! The Knights held their poise and cruised home as all the fight was taken out of the opposition with 20 minutes to go.
What a great step up in attitude and concentration. The last few weeks the boys have seemed out of step and uninspired. Not so today. With Liam cutting off all attacks, and the forwards feeding off great team work to get it to them time and time again Guildford must have felt like piggy-in-the-middle.
Now you can relax for a few days and relish your success, but the next game is likely to be much different as it is probably going to be against Guildford again, and they will be out for REVENGE!
9/6 v Wenty Waratahs
Score 4 – 3
We knew we were up for a tough match in this semi, taking on 1st place Wenty Waratahs and we were not dissapointed. The match was an end to end cracker.
The first half was evenly matched but Wenty went one up about 15 minutes in. That did not dampen our Knights enthusiasm, they just ran harder & faster with chances coming up front to Matt & Jacob but the radars were a little off.
The 2nd half continued the franetic pace with Tulizo, Courtney and the ever running Luke & Bryce doing their best in the mid field while Al & Adam streamed up & down the wings. Strong defence by Dom, Bronte Stephen & Jackson was backed up with some great keeping by Michael. Last minute of the game & some good fighting for the ball by Michael & Olwen eventually led to Luke snatching an equalizer. The full time whistle went & we knew we had a good chance in the extra time (golden goal) as Wentys coach had lost his voice.
The extra time match up continued in the same way, shots missed, important tackles made, saves made & posts hit but still 1:1 at the end of those 10 extra minutes. What now?? A penalty shoot out!! Wenty won the toss & shot first, after round one of shots it was 1:1, round 2 came & went & still 1:1 after a couple of misses. Round 3 took it to 2:2, then the fun started. Round 4 & Wenty stepped up, Michael steadied himself in goal, the shot came, a save by Michael. This was followed by a goal from the Knights, thats 2:3. Round 5 and another save by Michael meant we had won & no need for our last shot, we couldn't be beaten even if we missed.
After a rousing 3 cheers for the Waratahs we headed off & started our preparation for the Grand Final. Go Knights.
Encouragement: Bronte.
Knight of the round: Michael (goal keeper).
Great job team, we are all very proud of you. Next report: the Grand Final!!!
