Galaxy Softball Newsletter for week ending 15 Nov 09
Welcome to the 2nd newsletter for the Galaxy Softball Club. I haven't had any feedback about the first newsletter, so am assuming it's all good.
Here's the wrap up of the games for the weekend. Unfortunately I didn't get a chance to attend all the games, but will do the best I can.
T Ball
Another fun filled week for the kids, with no winners or losers. From what I've been told, there's quite a few good young players in the team, so let's hope they keep up the good work and their interest in the game and we all look forward to seeing them in future Galaxy teams.
Under 12's
The Under 12's had another close game this week, again only losing in the last innings, the final score being 11-12.
C Grade - Galaxy 2
This week we played RPCYC Focus.
Focus won the toss and sent us in to bat. Carmel was the first batter up and was walked, but then stole 2nd base and then 3rd. Steph unfortunately was struck out after hitting a couple of foul balls, but we were just getting used to the umpire's strike zone. Marg was next to face the pitcher and hit a high ball to short stop. Niva was up next and hit a beautiful double base hit to right field and brought Carmel home. Sue then stepped up to the plate and hit a perfect hit to centre field, bringing Niva home. Sheryl then faced the pitcher and was struck out, ending the top of the first at 2-0.
The first 3 batters for Focus were all put out and Lyanne only had to pitch 10 balls. End of the first innings and the score was 2-0.
The top of the 2nd and we were feeling a confident about the game, maybe a bit too confident. Lyanne was struck out but Anne was walked. Linda was also struck out. Carmel then hit a ball and due to an error made by the first base fielder, got on safely, advancing Anne to 3rd. Steph was next up and unfortunately was struck out and it was side away with the score still 2-0.
Focus' first batter was put out at first, however, the next 6 batters all got on base through some fine hitting and before the final out of the innings, had gotten 4 runners home, ending the dig at 2-4.
Top of the 3rd and we knew we had to fight back. Marg hit a double bagger to left field and then Niva hit a 3 bag hit to centre, bringing Marg home and placing Niva in a good position to score. Sue hit a fine hit to left field, bringing Niva home. Sheryl hit a fly ball to 3rd base, but not before Sue stole 2 bases and held up on 3rd. Lyanne was walked then Anne hit a safe hit to short stop, advancing Lyanne to 2nd base. Loaded bases and Linda was up next and got safely to 1st due to a fielder's choice out at 2nd base and also bringing Sue home. Carmel was up next and hit a fly to the pitcher, ending the top of the innings at 5-4.
Bottom of the 3rd and Focus could smell blood. First batter again was put out at first base, however, due to some good hitting, the next 2 batters got home before we got the last batter out. End of the 3rd Innings and the score is 5-6.
We started the top of the 4th knowing we had to get at least 2 runners home and then get 3 up 3 down for the opposition, in order to win. Due to 4 batters being walked and some fantastic hitting by our side, we got 5 runners home before the 3rd out. 10-6 with only 10 minutes left to play.
First batter up for Focus got on base through a safe hit to centre field. Their 2nd batter also got on base and advanced the other runner to 3rd. The third batter up got to first due to a fielder's choice out at 2nd base, but got the first runner home. Fourth batter up also got on base before a fly ball was hit to Anne for the 2nd out. The next batter was walked and before we could get the 3rd out of the innings, the umpire called game. As the innings was incomplete, the score reverted back and we lost by 1 run. Final score was 5-6. Regardless of the loss, this was a fantastic game and I know that the team can pull it together for the coming week - hey, not bad considering we've only played 4 games together and there are some very new 'newbies' on the team. Well done ladies :o)
B Grade - Galaxy 1
This week we played Outlaws 2
Although I wasn't here for this game, I hear that it was close for the first 2 innings, the score being 5-1 at the bottom of the 2nd Innings. Top of the 3rd and 6 of our batters were walked, ending the top of the innings at 13-1.
Excellent fielding in the bottom of the 3rd saw the opposition only get 2 runners home, ending the dig at 13-3.
The fourth innings saw us get another 3 home, 2 of the runs coming from a 3 base hit to left field from Debbie. Outlaws only got 1 home and at the end of the game, the final score was 16-4. Not as close or heart stopping as last week, but a good game all told.
