Pre Grand Final Presidents Report:
What a fortnight it has been down at Trober town! Both the seniors and reserves are through to the Grand Final and both have earned the right to have the week off!
As many of you can imagine I was pretty nervous Sunday morning but to see the way the boys turned up to play in both grades was amazing. I must congratulate the whole playing group on their application to the task over the past month. I would also like to congratulate Dean, Terry and Huffer for their work during the season they have taken the club to their first senior grand final in 10 years but more importantly they have ensured that the club has been promoted back up to the D3 section after only 12 months. Additionally a big congratulations needs to go to Theo for getting the reserves team into the grand final. Your passion for the game is there for everyone to see, and that passion and enthusiasm spills over onto your playing group ensuring they always give their best.
While it is very exciting to have both teams in the grand final all focus must turn to obtaining what we have all been working so hard for, 2 premierships. Speaking with a lot of other older La Trobe statesmen the message is loud and clear “don’t let this opportunity pass you by, as you never know when it will come again”. Since last Sunday I have received many emails of support from many La Trobe University Football Club Alumni (interestingly they all seem to be unable to attend due to being on holidays) many of these messages have been from past premiership players. All of these emails talk of the lifelong friendships they have formed in these premiership years and how winning a premiership at La Trobe is one of the more memorable moments of their youth.
I guess time for talk is over! All year many have speculated about the possibility of the Red and Black warriors obtaining another two flags to pin on the roof of our beloved pavilion. Hard work has gotten us in this position; only hard work will finish it off. To all players competing in the upcoming grand finals good luck give your best but more importantly give everything you have got.
Viva La Varsity!
Brad

Seniors Match Report
|
This week saw the Mighty Trobers head to St. Bernards in Essendon to take on the ladder leaders Albert Park for a spot in this year’s Grand Final. These teams had already squared of twice this year with the results being one win each. Latrobe’s win over the Falcons was also their only defeat for the home and away season, but as we all know finals are a new ball game.
The first quarter saw Latrobe kicking into a 5-goal breeze but a good display by our backline and some inaccurate kicking (3.6) saw the Falcons unable to take full advantage. Latrobe’s commitment to run and carry saw them kick 2 goals into the breeze to head into ¼ time 11 pts down.
Quarter number 2 saw Latrobe begin to put their stamp on this game with an 8 goal quarter, thanks in part to the breeze, but more due to the boys commitment to run and block for each other. Van Ooi and Storto kicked 2 each for the term. Another great quarter from Skelts, Dill and the back six saw Albert Park unable to score for the quarter. Latrobe entered half-time with a 40 point lead.
After some motivating words from Disco and Ludes the boys came out for the second half determined to book their place in the Grand Final. Unfortunately kicking goals into the breeze was proving to be extremely hard work with the Trobers unable to kick a major for the quarter, but thanks to the work of our rock-solid defense we managed to hold the Falcons to only two fro the quarter. Latrobe finished the Premiership quarter with a 27 pt lead.
The last term began with the Latrobe bench looking a little bit like a casualty ward, but this would not deter the Trobers from making sure this game was theirs. Van Ooi continued his best afield performance, Storto and Quatta also continued leave their mark on the game. The final term saw Albert Park throw everything they had at Latrobe, but were unable to close the gap, with both sides kicking 4 goals each for the quarter, to see Latrobe run out 29 pt victors and book their place in this year’s Grand Final.

Reserves Match Report
|
It was the first final the LaTrobe reserves side have played in since the famous 2006 D2 premiership side that this scribe was a part of and well the boys played fittingly of a side that finished on top. Apart from the first 10 minutes of the first quarter the "trobers" were mostly unchallanged and ended up with a 10 goal win.
The first quarter was a scrappy affair with the football showing the nerves of both sides. The trobers had the wind in the first quarter and used it well by keeping the North Brunswick "thugs" scoreless untill quarter time. Justin "Mr September" Lania was clearly best afield all day kicking telling goals at the start of the second and third quarters to demoralise the opposition and keep momentum with the "trobers", he ended up with 7 for the game.
From the backline Kristan "Jeffers" Jeffrey and Paul "Russ" Russle were the go to men to spot up our forwards and they finished up in the best for the day. After half time North Brunswick decided (like most D4 sides) to go the wack to unsettle our young players but like always it doesn't work. Adam "Slayer" Gill managed to stay quite composed even with two North Brunswick players laying into him. While Jack "Stowie" Stow couldn't keep his cool and decided to say a few choice words before copping a right hook to the back of the head.
It is good to see that the LaTrobe boys managed to rise above the blatent thuggery of North Bruswick and held themselves with great esteem and represented the club in a posetive manner. Anyway, congratulations to the boys in making a grand final it is a great experience and they should enjoy it while they can. But always remember it is just another game try not to waste any nervous energy before the game. And remeber, as our local guru JD says "grand finals are always won by the team that realises first that it is just another game".
