Seniors Match Report
|
It was the start of the premiership defence months of training and hard work had come down to this moment. Against Kew at their home La Trobe hadn’t won there in 2 years.
It was a very slow start as Kew got away to a flyer getting out to a 3 goal lead, sometimes comical play from La Trobe didn’t help the cause with young twiggy (Luke McCormack) missing an absolute sitter in front of goal but La Trobe showed a little fight and clawed its way back to be a goal down at the first change.
The start of the 2nd quarter was a different story as La Trobe was a completely different side and dominated from the word go. Vo (Brad Van Ooi), out of the centre was inspiration to think a few weeks ago he was stumbling of the field. All the big forwards were stepping up, the likes of Danger (Stuart Patten), Rossy (Alex Ross) and in for his first game Clifford The Big Red Dog (Tom Harding) all kicking goals. As the half time siren sounded La Trobe went into the break with a 5 goal lead which could have been a lot more if the boys would of kicked straight.
The 2nd half started as the first half finished with La Trobe totally dominated and it all started in the centre with the president getting 5 consecutive centre clearances thanks to the tap work of woody (Brendan Wood) and swaggy (Swaggy). The whole team was gelling with big danger slotting goals from everywhere, and when Kew tried to enter their forward line the ball was getting repealed by the big boys led by the 150 game veteran disco (Dean Sheldrick), the new DVC (Paul Russell) was very impressive with his raking left foot and with boomer to come back in the back line can only get stronger.
From there on the win was a formality with a few junk time goals getting kicked (Xavier Sheills), the crowd that was there where treated to some class and probably one of the better goals they have ever seen with Ganino slotting an absolute genius goal from the pocket on his left foot. Danger had the chance to slot 10 but tripped at the final hurdle and only kicked 9, still a very good effort. The game ended with the trobers getting up by around 80 points.
All in all it was a great team performance with everyone playing well, the midfielders got on top in the 2nd half due to their fresh legs. Great pressure around the ground was a feature of the game ,let’s hope the form can continue for the rest of the season......

Reserves Match Report
|
Welcome all to another year of footy with La Trobe. Round one had La Trobe playing Kew away who we absolutely smashed in last years Grand Final. It was expected to be a hard in close affair as Kew has a tiny ground and bigger older bodied players. We were confident but as it is a new year you never know. It turns out that this year is the same as the last. Apart from the first 15 minutes it was very one sided as Kew didn’t have the pace or fitness to keep up with our runners. It was also a welcome back to Ross “Slattsy” Slater after a 4 year overseas trip; he kicked 5 goals to be a great focal point up forward. Mark “steely” Steele will push for senior selection this week with a fantastic game on the wing, providing our forwards with silky delivery. Special mention has to go to our ruck division of Mark “sturge” Sturges, Aaron “Tully” Tully and pinch hitting Dale “Mouse” Mckie for dominating all and sundry both in centre bounces and around the ground, it was pretty to watch. The game finished up with La Trobe 70 odd point winners but this week will be a bigger test with Elsternwick being a D3 side from last year but this scribe is quietly confident that the boys will come away with a win.

Women's Match Report
|
Round one saw the girls gear up and make a return to Melton with some very average weather. Upon arriving, we quickly discovered that Melton had changed a bit since our last visit and looked to be a much fitter side than last year. With that being said, they were no match for the fitness of the La Trobe girls, who proved that pre season had paid off.
We began the first quarter with some cold and wet conditions; even our water boy was forced to find shelter in the bushes to escape the stinging rain. Yet, the La Trobe girls came out swinging from the get go. Kellie got us on the board with a thrilling checkside goal, followed by a set shot in some challenging conditions. While last years leading goal kicker, Sammi showed her magic finishing on a comfortable 3 goals. The one and only A.Johns scored our final goal, proving once again that the basketballers convert nicely to women’s footy. John’s also showed great determination with some of the toughest tackles we’ve seen, right up there with Jess McIver ‘s tackles, which needless to say have our opponent thinking twice before taking them on. For those two though, it wasn’t just the making of tackles but the breaking of tackles, as on numerous occasions they gave their opponents the big ‘don’t argue’.
Skye and Elise put in a stellar effort in the backline, with Cat showing signs of a promising season as full back. The backline managed to keep Melton goalless until the second half. New recruit Maddy and Sarah McMullan also played a great game making into the best ons, something I believe we will see a lot more of as the season progresses.
All the new girls impressed with their skills and fitness and have put in a lot of hard work at training over the last few months. We have seen record numbers at training this year and we are looking to be a very competitive side this season.
Congratulations to our captains for 2010, Skye Bell (captain), Jess McIver (Vice Captain) and Catie Mitchell (Vice Captain). Also, Welcome to Stuart “Danger” Patten who has come on board as the girl’s trainer this year.
Special thanks to Rueben Dare who has volunteered to be the girls runner in 2010, Alex “Guinness” Mann, who consistently runs the boundary for us, Jack Stow who took on the role of goal umpire on the weekend in terrible conditions and always helps us out and to Quatta, who is always giving up his time to lend a hand each week. The support from the guys that get down to the games and help out at training is greatly appreciated. It is these guys who give the club such a great reputation for supporting its women’s team. It was great to see so many girls down at the men’s away game on the weekend too, hope to see more of you make it to their game this week at home.
A special mention to jess McIver and Imo for making the huge effort of driving 6 hours from mildura to Melton just to play on Sunday. Brilliant!
