Presidents Report
What a fantastic start to the season!
The Seniors and Reserves are undefeated and the Under 19s grabbed their first win of the season on Friday night when they made history by playing the first ever match under lights at La Trobe for competition points. The girls made their debut in the V.W.F.L. and despite not taking the chocolates in either game, they have showed real determination and spirit, giving all involved great optimism that a bagful of wins is just around the corner.
Above I have highlighted the obvious reasons as to why we can all consider the first two weeks of 2009 a great success. However, it is my opinion that the reasons we can all be proud of our start to 2009 cannot be, and should not be measured by wins and losses. There are three things that have really pleased me over the last month, and I think as a club we should be more proud of these than the results we have achieved. The three things are:
1. Commitment from the playing group: Training numbers have been at an all time high over the past month. With around 70 players vying for a game in the seniors and reserves every week this is to be expected. What has impressed me most is the way everyone is going about training. Guys are turning up early and having a kick beforehand. The intensity and work rate is up from the beginning meaning coaches do not have to get the group together to tell them to lift. In years gone by this has not always been a feature at La Trobe. Furthermore the coaches have reported to me that they are hearing from players in advance if they are unable to train.
2. Player participation: As I stated at the start of the year it is very important for the playing group to support each other and the entire club. It has been great to see large numbers at selection on Thursday nights as well as after the match in the rooms. All senior players have been making it for the start of the reserve game and likewise many of the reserve players are staying to watch the seniors play. We have had good numbers at the Peacock on Saturday night. However it was most pleasing to see many senior and reserve players in attendance at Friday Night’s Under 19 game. To see Dillon Farrell come down and run water for the lads was fantastic. Likewise to have Phil Merrett from the Under 19s come down and man the scoreboard on Saturday for the seniors and reserves was equally as pleasing.
3. Players helping out the committee: As many of you who have been around the place for awhile would know we do struggle to get volunteers to help out on match day. Simon Marchitto and Dom Conheady helping out when not being given a game are other great examples of players participating when they could easily have been off doing their own thing. Many other players have put their hands up to help out around the place, which is great. Additionally all are showing great respect for our new facilities by cleaning up after themselves.
In my opinion the 3 observations that I have made above are the reason we can all say that the beginning of 2009 has been a very successful one. With 16 rounds left to go in the regular season it is too early to be talking about finals and team success. However I am positive that if we all continue to do the things outlined above 2009 will be very successful for the club. At the very least it will be a very enjoyable and fun place to play football.

Seniors Match Report
|
Round 2 saw the Trobers welcome Mt. Lilydale to the Main Oval for an ANZAC day clash, as well as a howling gale which would play a major role in the outcome of this match. The captain's converged into the middle of the oval to decide who would get the first chance to take advantage of the breeze, and unfortunately the boys from Latrobe lost the toss and would be kicking into the breeze to start proceedings. At first this appeared not to be a problem with the boys moving the ball well and goaling through Disco, but this would be the only time the Trobers would venture forward for the quater. Mt. Lilydale peppered the goal face but inaccurate kicking saw them finish the quarter with 4.6, going into the 1/4 time huddle with a 24 pt lead. Brad Van Ooi also had is modelling career thrown in to jeopardy by a broken nose, which saw him miss the remainder of the match.
The second quarter saw the Latrobe boys kicking with the breeze, and they took advantage through hard running and being first in for the pill. Good efforts from Coffey, Sheildsy, and Joey helped the boys up forward to apply a little scoreboard pressure. Inaccurate kicking being the only blemish on an otherwise very productive quarter, Latrobe finishing the quarter with 4.6 to Lilydale's zip, zilch, nada, to go into the main break with a 6pt lead.
The boys came out from halftime break determined to continue the good work and hard running from the previous half. The defence lead by Knighta, Hendo and Skelts battled gallantly keeping the Mt Lilydale forwards to only 3 goals for the quarter. Coffey continued to have a major impact on the game, and the move of Sheildsy up forward came with immediate dividends with him kicking his second goal for the game. Mt Lilydale were able to wrestle back the lead out scoring the Trobers for the quarter and going into the final break with a 7 pt lead.
The boys came out from the 3/4 time huddle, and put the boys from Mt Lilydale on notice slamming home 7 unanswered goals for the quarter. Mt Lilydale, knowing they were outclassed, turned to thuggery, with Paddy and Thwaita being the unlucky recipients of some unwarranted behaviour (Although some say that Thwaita might just have been suffering Alzheimer’s due to his old age) . In more positive aspects Joey and Danger kicked a couple of goals each for the quarter, and Coffey continued his best on field form to finish the game with a goal. Thankfully no scoreboard issues this week with the Trobers being clear winners by 41pts. A great all-round game by Coffey up forward helped set up the Latrobe victory, and he was supported well by Joey Conheady and Skelts.

Reserves Match Report
|
Well, another huge win by the reserves team. On a blustery day at the Latrobe University main oval pavilion, Latrobe came out swinging kicking 6 goals 7 in the first quater to a solitary goal from Mt Lilydale. Gezza was lively early with many shots on goal and great play setting up other majors. It was in the first half that our new recruit Twiggy did the hard stuff by putting his head over the ball and nearly got it knocked off. Needless to say he was a bit wobbly after the hit but managed to get back out on the ground and ended up kicking 2 goals. The back line put together another sterling effort restricting the opposition to only 4 goals at the long break. Jack Elliot, Ming and Cheese provided great run from the backline.
Both Paul Russell and Benny Westaway kept their men quiet all day, whilst using “Gilbee like” foot skills in setting up play from the backline. With the onballers receiving the ball on a platter from Vaggy and KT in the ruck, it turned into a precession after half time. Gezza continued on his merry way ending up with 6 goals, before leaving the ground with suspected swine flu in the last quarter. Adam Gill and John McGuinness continued on from last week slotting 7 and 4 goals respectively.
The boys ran out the game in great style, finishing up with a resounding win and collecting the 4 points and plenty of percentage.

U19 Match Report
|
Round 2 of 2009, on a Friday night, we witnessed history with La Trobe University Football Club first ever match under lights and it was great to start it off with a win.
With a steady flow of rain all day it was always going to be tough damp conditions to play in. The first quarter didn't start well for us with undisciplined play leaving us a man down for the rest of the game and with only 17 on the field for 12 minutes. But this saw the boys band together with Woody dominating in the ruck and the on-ballers not letting him down. With plenty of run from the centre, we took control of the game early. Only accuracy let us down, the trobers kicking 1.6 to 1.2.
With one tall down we were forced to make a couple of changes. Soulsby moved up to CHF and Richie into CHB, and they didn't disappoint. Richie was having a great game and was unlucky not to be in the best. Soulsby, BFG and Ben Dimond gave us plenty of targets up forward, with goals to Dimond and Soulsby we had finally started exerting some scoreboard pressure. Kynan proved that the pocket was a great resting spot for him, looking dangerous and kicking a goal. First year player big Lach Eades also slotted nicely into FF with a goal. It was a great quarter for us considering we continued to give away more free kicks than Collingwood, as we kicked 4.3 and restricted Rupertswood to just 3 behinds.
Moving Jack McMeel onto a HBF in the 3rd proved a master stroke, he provided plenty of forward attack along with Ben Davis. But we continued to give away free kicks which started to cost us on the score board. We scored 3.3 to 4 goals straight.
Up by 5 goals coming into the last we still had plenty to do to seal it. Joey, Wagdin, Ash and Kynan still working hard in the centre along with Soulsby and Woody in the ruck giving us every chance and with a couple of early goals the game was over. It was a good game and great to see us perform when we needed to, but perhaps we could have won by more but for a few undisciplined free kicks costing us. Great performances from Kynan on the ball and in the pocket, Woody in the ruck, Soulsby in defence and attack and Ben with run out of defence. Good result lads, lets keep it up. Go Trober's!

| Most Embarrassing Moment: |
Ahh, so many. There was the time I drunkenly accosted Leaping Larry L at the Great Northern Hotel. Or that time I saw ‘Huey Lewis and the News’ at the Tennis Centre. Or perhaps scandal with the Little Indian Boy. Or the incident with the honey jar. Or maybe the aftermath of drinking a dozen Illusions at The Club with Nick Rosengren. Or perhaps the lemon sweater I used to wear out in the mid-80s. Or the time I asked the guy with polio what was wrong with his leg. And then there was the time I turned up at school and realised I wasn’t wearing any clothes…ok, the last one may have been a dream … should I continue? This is good therapy. I’m starting to feel better.

Ressies B&F & Premiership in ’93 and all those club awards like ‘most improved’ that they give to the guys that can’t kick straight but who turn up to preseason training. Generally performed fairly well on the footy trip. |
| If I wasn't playing footy i would be: |
Opening the batting for Australia. Unfortunately I had to choose between the two and given the fact I had no discernable sporting ability, Trobertown seemed like a perfect fit. |
