Community Service Award Recipient
Reverend Bill Crews

|
|
The Rotary Club of Sydney’s Community Service Award for 2007/8 will be presented to the Rev Bill Crews, AM, on Tuesday 4th December.
The President of Sydney Rotary, Garry Browne, said the Club’s prestigious award was being awarded to Rev Bill Crews for inspired leadership in the formation and continuing guidance to the Exodus Foundation in restoring faith to underprivileged people in distress.
“We salute Bill Crews as an outstanding contributor to community service, and our Club is proud to name him as the recipient of the Community Service Award 2007/08,” said Garry Browne.
Background:
Bill Crews, an electrical engineer changed his life’s direction at the age of 27 when in 1969, he visited the Wayside Chapel under the dynamic leadership of Rev Ted Noffs, who had created the first Drug Referral Centre and the first 24 hour Crisis Centre.
In 1971, Bill Crews committed himself to a life of helping people, and joined the leadership team at the Wayside Chapel. By 1972, he was director of the Crisis Centre and directed all the social work programs until 1983. He created the first program in Australia to reunite Adoptees and Birth Parents (Reunion Register), and the first program to assist parents in danger of abusing their children (Child Abuse Prevention Service). He established the first type of modern youth refuge in Australia. In 1978, Bill and Ted Noffs created Australia’s first Life Education Centre Sydney, and these centres have now been established throughout Australia, and in Hong Kong, Thailand, New Zealand, United Kingdom and United States.
Upon graduating from the Uniting Church’s Theology College in 1986, Bill Crews was ordained a Minister and appointed to the parish of Ashfield in the inner Sydney western suburbs. He developed a very active Christian fellowship and created the Exodus Foundation to help and care for the homeless, abandoned youth and other disadvantaged people in need.
Under the umbrella of the Exodus Foundation, Bill has spearheaded a number of significant initiatives. The Loaves and Fishes Free Restaurant was opened in 1989 and now provides free breakfast and lunch for up to 400 people six days a week. In 1995, Bill established the first Tutorial Centre in Ashfield focused on helping underprivileged youth to learn to read and write.
Tutorial Centres have now been established in Redfern, Gladstone and soon in Darwin. The Foundation also provides free medical and dental services to the socially disadvantaged, and Bill has recently extended his passion for helping the sick through the distribution of life-extending supplements to children suffering with AIDS in Africa and Asia Pacific. All this is achieved through donations of $ 2 million a year with no government funding.
Bill Crews has received the Rotary Foundation’s International Paul Harris Fellow award, was Father of the year and Humanitarian of the year in 1992, became one of the National Trust’s 100 National Living Treasures in 1998, and received the Order of Australia (AM) in 1999. |

The doors we open and close each day decide the lives we live.

The theme for this week I felt was apt as it reflects the metaphorical way we look at life and the community and society in which we live. Our recipient of the Community Service Award for 2007, Rev Bill Crews opens his doors every day to anyone who requires help and stretches his hand out to those in need.
He is unique and a great Australian, in the way he gives a hand up not always the hand out. His activities and initiatives are well known in the community and he has built a fine reputation. On Tuesday he will share some of his thoughts with us.
Rotary also has many opportunities to open doors and through the various networks and avenues it has throughout the world. Rotarians are from all walks of life and we don’t use enough of our knowledge and expertise to understand what talent we have within our members and how they can help us open many more doors and build significantly more bridges in the community than we already have.
We have the talent, all we need is the energy and confidence to get out in the community and let the world know how successful we have been and are at opening doors to create more peaceful and more humanitarian projects to make a difference in the community.

Scene from Darlington School | Last Wednesday we participated in the Darlington School talent quest. This school is on the lower end of the socio- economic end of the community within the City of Sydney. We ran a BBQ and presented the prizes for this end of year event. It was a great success and this school through our efforts of supplying the food etc created a way to raise money, not for themselves but for a UNICEF program.
How amazing is it that a school that has so little, is thinking of those who have even less. This is another example of; the doors we open and close each day decide the lives we live.
I was very proud and felt humbled by what this school was doing to help others. The children parents and friends were all amazed at the success of their efforts; they raised $1500 for UNICEF a great result.
Thank you to all those who participated from our club it was a really enjoyable afternoon and I hope that this becomes an annul event as the value we gain and those who were involved open many more doors that we imagined.
This is the power of Rotary and we were able to share the spirit and pride of being a Rotarian.
See you Tuesday.

Rotary and Gates Foundation commit $200 million to eradicate Polio
Rotary International last week announced a partnership with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation that will inject a much-needed US$200 million into the global campaign to eradicate polio, a crippling and sometimes fatal disease that still paralyses children in parts of Africa, Asia and the Middle East and threatens children everywhere.
In Sydney, Rotary District Governor Kevin W. Fenwick said the Rotary Foundation has received a $100-million Gates Foundation grant, which Rotary will raise funds to match, dollar-for-dollar, over three years.
He said Rotary will spend the initial $100 million within one year in direct support of immunisation activities carried out by the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI), a partnership spearheaded by the World Health Organisation (WHO), Rotary International, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and UNICEF.
"The extraordinary dedication of Rotary members has played a critical role in bringing polio to the brink of eradication," says Bill Gates, co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
"Eradicating polio will be one of the most significant public health accomplishments in history, and we are committed to helping reach that goal."
"This endorsement of Rotary's polio eradication efforts by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation is just the catalyst and challenge Rotary members need to keep our promise to the children of the world that polio will be eradicated," Kevin Fenwick said. |
