Kerrie Grant works as a forensic archaeologist.
She goes to places like Morocca, Nigeria and Cyprus retrieving things from soil and rock that tell her how ordinary people lived and how they died.
She was part of the team that unearthed 'the hobbit', the 12,000-year-old remains of Homo floresiensis in Indonesia.
Kerrie has recently retuned from Iraq where she spent two and a half years unearthing the graves of innocent men, women and children killed by Saddam Hussein's regime.
Kerrie decribes her work as immensely rewarding. She says archaeology's appeal is 'the unknown' and that you really don't know what you're going to find.
"The Indonesian one (on the Island of Flores) was a classic example. Professor Mike Morewood had this great project to re-date Indonesian archaeology so we were going to a lot of different sites looking at very important Indonesian finds and trying to give them more acccurate dating... well, the unknown... Homo floresiensis literally popped her head up."

As I indicated last week the group of PE Patricia Harrison, VP Rene Benitez, PP Adrian Pilton and Dairneen, PP Bruce Edwards and Zeny, and David Smith travelled to Singapore and the Philippines for what became an amazing experience that we all shared.
Our visit started in Singapore where we all attended the Singapore Rotary meeting, having been given wonderful hospitality from the members on the previous day and night.
We secured their support for the project joining with us and Makati Rotary Club to fund TSPI, a micro finance organisation in the Philippines, which is focussed on assisting Philippinos to start businesses and at the same time build strength into their communities through collaboration.
We met with branch and area managers in Manila to understand the way the process operates and we then spent time talking to the recipients of the funding. These were shop owners, auto tyre sellers and a furniture store owner, all motivated and thankful to have the support.
We spent time also visiting what is know as the Gawad Kalinga project where Rotary is building houses for families to give them a roof over their head. This project is giving dignity and honour to those who cannot afford.
It is not surprising that when you walk through this estate there are houses built and sponsored by many people and organisations, some of which include Gerry Rihs, Bruce Edwards, John Rawson, Adrian Pilton, David Smith and Rene Benitez. Patricia Harrison and myself are now the proud owners of a 25sqm house each, and in my case the house I acquired accommodated 13 children and their mother!
This visit was in my view a resounding success and I want to thank Rene Benitez and David Smith specifically for their efforts in making this trip a reality.

Notice from District 9750 Secretary
It has come to the notice of the Council of Governors that a number of Rotarians in our District may have been approached to advance funds in circumstances outside the normal range of Rotary activities.
Rotarians are strongly counselled that should any such approach occur, they should seek the advice of their financial consultant before committing any funds.
(Signed)
Cheryl Deguara,
District Secretary.
