Looking after young Australians
with high care needs.

Youngcare is a nationally registered charity and non-profit organisation formed to help young Australians with high care needs. Youngcare is independent and non denominational.

Through researching the issue, the Youngcare board was surprised to learn that young Australians with long term high care needs have few options. The only real alternatives being aged care nursing homes or part time support from community groups at home, with family taking on the remaining responsibility. In fact, in Australia today, there are 6,300 young people residing in aged care nursing homes. Clearly this is inappropriate.

Many thousands more reside in hospitals, or isolated not by choice, living by themselves within the community leaving them lonely, vulnerable and without the necessary care for their needs.

The issue of caring for these people is broad and complex. Perhaps that's why very little has been done. Youngcare’s aim is to raise awareness of the issue and through forming partnerships with Community, Business and Government seeks to develop viable, sustainable solutions that provide the care and dignity we all deserve. Youngcare collaborates with those who need care, their families. We do not tell them this is what you get. We have asked what do you want and this is how we will provide it.

Youngcare’s first apartment complex for those with high care needs is currently under construction and due to open late 2007.

First and foremost David brings to Youngcare a deep understanding of the cause through his personnel experience.

Beyond this David has a strong business and marketing background built on an career in senior National Sales and Marketing roles for Flight Centre, News Limited and Pacific Publications as well in private enterprise.

He has recently been announced as Queensland’s Australian of the Year. He has also been given the John Studdy Award by the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Australia, their high award for services to those with MS.

President's Message

President Garry Browne invites you to join us for lunch every Tuesday.

United we stand divided we fall.

I’m sure we can all think of many applications to the theme this week and to a large extent Rotary is just that, a united organisation whose mandate is for peace and humanitarian purposes.

We all endeavour to focus on this but at times we get distracted.

The initiatives of our club are many and the District Conference in Canberra is one we have chosen to support as it places our club in a leadership position within the district. We are sponsoring the opening event on the Friday evening and already there are 150 attending our cocktail evening and not even a handful from our club!

It is important that we all try and make an effort where ever possible to be in Canberra for the District Conference to support our club and whether you come for the full time 2 days or part time it will be supporting our club. Our target group number is 20.

This conference is Celebrating the 80th Anniversary of the first district in Australia the Rotary Club of Sydney was the Founding Club and hence the importance.

Please try and support our club at this event. I would welcome suggestions and ideas from anyone as to how we can encourage members to attend.

This Week's Meeting

The speaker at this weeks meeting is David Conry who is the CEO of Youngcare. This is another demonstration of an organisation identifying a need in the community and doing something about it.

That is just one of the reasons that Youngcare fits so well with our club and Rotary.

Come to the meeting on Tuesday and hear about the great work of Youngcare and the Rotary Club of Sydney, involvement.

Our members are our greatest source of strength and provide a camaraderie and fellowship that many organisations do not offer; it is in all our interests to increase our membership not only for what we can achieve collectively but what it can do to strengthen us as individuals to allow us to grow and develop.

Please continue to give consideration to whom could join our club. If you feel awkward or are uncertain about inviting guests then I would like to hear from you as to how we can ensure the club makes a good impression and how we can encourage our members to bring guests and inturn build membership.

Make sure your guest also takes away a membership brochure which is available at every meeting.

With strong membership and a passion to be a Rotarian we can continue to grow and build our club to be united and strong.

Group Study Exchange

Hosts Needed

A USA-Mexico Group Study Exchange team stands on the edge of the Barranca Sinforosa during a break from their Group Study Exchange scientific exploration.

The incoming GSE Team from District 7720 in North Carolina will be in Sydney for the first week in October. I am therefore looking for Hosts for the nights of Sunday 30th September till Friday 5th October inc.

The role of hosts is to show their guest how we live, so no special preparations are needed. They also need to ensure their guest gets to the various locations within Sydney for their vocational and other activities. Usually this can be done via public transport or dropping off.

Would you ask your members if they would host a team member for this week?

Club Archives

The Club’s Archives are once again on the move, after spending 17 months on a rent-free basis in the offices of Servcorp – our thanks to Taine Moufarrige for offering this facility.

Our new location, also rent-free and again on a temporary basis, is at 111 Elizabeth Street, in the offices of Breene & Breene Solicitors, thanks to some sleuthing by Ted McKeown.

For both of these relocations we are indebted to Sophie Dillon and her team at ‘Moving Strategies”. At short notice, Sophie supplied not only the labour of professional packers and a large number of cartons, but also the transport between locations.

The Club offers it special thanks to these three Club members. However we are still on the lookout for a more permanent location (desirably an area of some 1500 sq.ft. in the City area) for the Club’s archives.

Host an Exchange Student

You or a friend can host an exchange student.

In fact, anyone can host.

You don’t have to be a Rotarian.

You don’t have to have kids.

You don’t have to know what an iPod is!

You only need to provide a stable and friendly home, and the enthusiasm to help a young person experience the best year of their life.

You don’t have to speak a foreign language.

Most of our inbounds have reasonable English when they arrive and also have the objective of learning English while they are here and want you to stick to English.

You will need to provide some references who we will contact , as part of Rotary’s Child Protection Policy.
