Teach them how to fish - It's a matter of Education

This week the focus of the Australian population has been on making a decision as to who should lead the country for the next three years. The fact of the matter is that whoever and whatever side of the political spectrum you favour, the community still needs to have organisations like Rotary to focus on the areas of society that are not sexy or interesting when it comes to vote capturing.
We in Rotary will support and assist those in need and this year is very much focussed on education and helping the disadvantaged in our community. Education Matters focuses on lifting the level of knowledge and understanding of learning. Both from a tertiary sense but also an understanding of difficulties young people face with respect to mental illness and low self esteem.
We have chosen to assist and support this segment of society. On Tuesday we will hear from a former member of our club Murray Wells. Murray is with Auschol who in my view, helps put strength and add to completing the puzzle of developing, educating and training those who work in senior roles within the Non- for- Profits.
This is all about helping those people help themselves. “Teaching them how to fish”, in the world where competition and fiscal responsibility are all so important.
I’m very keen to assist and develop people who can make a difference. Those prepared to take the leap and give training and education a chance to assist them in making a difference.
To allow all this to happen we need to have committed Rotarians who can assist with this process and we require the funds to give ongoing assistance.
We can do both of these things. There are Rotarians available and ready to assist and we have an ART UNION which DOES require your support. We need people out there selling our tickets to ensure we can continue to be successful. PLEASE SUPPORT and give us your ideas of how we can sell our 160 BOOKS.
On a lighter note a BIG thank you to those who supported my request for help at the Sydney Christmas Parade. It was I believe a great success.

A FANTASTIC CHANCE FOR ALL ROTARIANS TO GET INVOLVED IN A BIT OF fundraising …
You know how it is. Someone has a bright idea and expects you to find time to attend an event, dig up the dough for a ticket or two and dress up to the nines. Not this time!
Here’s a chance to strut your stuff in your own time, at your own place, with your own friends or colleagues, on a date that suits you …
This initiative presents a fantastic opportunity for Sydney Rotarians to host their own fund-raising event: ‘An Endless Summer Lunch’ Each member of the Club is invited to host a Lunch in their own home or Boardroom.
- You choose the day, date and time. - You choose the friends or colleagues you’d like to invite. - You choose how many people you’d like to attend. - You choose the food you’d like to eat and drinks you’d like to imbibe. - You ask attendees to donate $50 per head to Club Charities. (Information booklets on current President’s Projects are available; simply pick them up from the front table at Rotary Lunch).
The $50 donation is fully tax-deductible if the host picks up the entire cost of catering. Official Receipts will be available.
Example – invite 6 guests, donate $300 to President’s Projects. If the hosts also include a $50 donation x 2 then obviously another $100 can be added. Invite 10 guests – donate $500 etc. If 100 Rotarians agree to do this, potentially we can raise $40,000+. Not a bad return for having fun! Please consider …

Now that I’ve dried my eyes …
I guess I’m lucky to have been brought up in the classical and sacred music tradition. It might also help that my patriarchal lineage is Welsh. But … I wasn’t the only one stirred to tears. The Choir’s chosen repertoire was not only music to thrill the ears it was music to move the soul.
From Schubert’s marvellous Sanctus to the rousing Men of Harlech, Franck’s wonderful Panis Angelicus and the heart wrenching beauty of Adam’s O Holy Night (a personal favourite) to John Hughes’ traditional Calon Ian and Cwm Rhondda [one of the world’s most popular hymns] and various ethnic sources between, it was an absolute treat.
The Welsh National Anthem was a fitting finale – apart from the encore of course.
PP Adrian Pilton, your fellow choristers, soloists and Music Director John Lloyd – take a bow. Congratulations and thank you. The Recital was wonderful.
