This week as a group we will consider the following ethics hypothetical. Please consider the following situation and attend or comment via email to the office.
You are the parent of a twenty-nine year old son whom you sent on his honeymoon five days earlier. He is expected to be away for another 16 days. You and your pertner (wife/husband) have just been advised that your partner (the other parent of your son) has a cancer, howerver, the prognosis is not yet very clear.
1). Do you advise your son:
- now;
- as soon as he returns;
- when the prognosis is clearer; or
- not at all.
2). Would your answer to 1) above be any different if his absence overseas is expected to be for a longer period of time.
3). Is it your perogative/duty to advise your son or is the matter to be decided upon by your partner only?
4). What is your position if your partner insists they do not want to tell your son at any time. |

Value or Values - How do we keep them in Balance
Having been away for the last three meetings I firstly want express a big thank you to Ann Burleigh and Rene Benitez for stepping in during my absence.
I can report that my trip to Europe, where dedicated support was given to the Australian Rugby team and together with a number of our other Club members who were also there, could still not lift the Australian team to greater heights. Sad but that is sport.
This month in Rotary International’s calendar is Vocational Service month however with our Ethic Hypothetical this Tuesday I felt it appropriate to look at the question of Value or Values in our life.
We often struggle to make decisions about what is the appropriated direction or decision in life, which relates to Value verse Values. Commercial organisations and government organisations to name a few have great difficulty; however I would suggest that Rotary does not suffer with the same difficulty.
| Rotary’s philosophy, its strength, its network our passion and spirit allow us to achieve significant success without having to make the same compromises some of these other organisations have to make. |
Having said this, we need to be commercial in our approach and this can put many off side. However I would prefer to use the word accountability to describe our approach to managing our club and its projects. The bottom line is that we want to deliver outstanding projects in the agreed time and the agreed cost that will achieve the agreed outcomes.
When we are given the guardianship of significant funds to manage on behalf of others we need to have good controls and be trusted to deliver on what is agreed. This I believe we do as a club very well, however times change and we need to continue to maintain our relevance and update our practises where appropriate.
When we can promote these elements of being able to balance Values verse Value and communicate that we uphold high ethics and morals, then this will allow us to continue to attract donations from the community so we can continue to achieve and deliver on all the projects in which we involve ourselves.
| Rotary's four way test is a good way to look and consider whether we have balance in Values verses Value. |
Let’s all continue to promote that fact that Rotary has a balance of Value verses Values and share the pride and spirit of being a Rotarian See you this Tuesday.

| Pay it Forward - a district challenge |
|
To mark Rotary's 103rd birthday in 2008, Kevin W Fenwick, District Governor of Rotary District 9750 in Sydney, is giving each Rotary Club President $100 with a very clear PAY IT FORWARD challenge.
DG Kevin expects each Club to commence a community service project, to show how they can leverage up the end value of this gift from the Rotary District. He also wants each Club to post their efforts on "YouTube" as well as in the local media!
The Challenge is to show Rotary shares and cares for the community.
TIMING:
-
October - stories in Club Bulletins regarding the Challenge
-
Early November, District Governor formally and publicly issues PAY IT FORWARD challenge to all Rotary Club Presidents in the District. A symbolic handing over of $100 to a group of Rotary Presidents to be made with media present.
-
November - Clubs to be supplied with a range of ideas of some of the activities in which they may care to participate to give Rotary maximum visibility. Some activities will be very basic and practical, such as cutting the lawn for a needy person or assisting single parents around their home or assistance to a disabled person or people in the community. By getting others to match the Rotary District Grant, the level of assistance will be much greater and attract more local publicity.
-
1st December - at the Presidents and Partners lunch, check on activities planned and give the PAY IT FORWARD Challenge a boost. Photographs and commitments obtained for local publicity.
-
Mid January - Clubs followed up on progress with Challenge and media releases issued. Clubs reminded that their Challenge activities should be reported in local news media and videoed for use on You Tube. Instructions given how to upload to You Tube.
-
Late January, advertisement to be prepared on Challenge and Rotary's 103rd Birthday to appear in Sydney Morning Herald during 3rd week of January.
-
Early February - Final reminders for Clubs, media releases issued and Sydney Morning Herald advertisement placed.
-
Late February - Wrap up of publicity efforts, You Tube videos/pictures posted.
The caring for others in our community is limited only by the imagination. So start planning your involvement now! |
