Phil Burgess is Group Managing Director for Public Policy & Communications at Telstra Corporation, where he is responsible for public policy, regulatory affairs, government relations, media relations, corporate communications and the Telstra Foundation.
Phil has worn many hats during his career — including educator, writer, businessman, advisor to leaders of business and government, media commentator, adventurer, public service and senior positions in the private sector.
Prior to taking up his position at Telstra, Phil served as President of the National Academy of Public Administration in Washington DC and was chief executive of three think tanks focused on leadership and public policy.
Phil has written extensively on emerging patterns of work in the United States, coining the term 'lone eagles' to describe the growing number of entrepreneurs and freelance professionals who can live and work anyplace, primarily because of advances in telecommunications technologies. |

Vice - President's Message |
|
Awareness
Firstly, I must thank Ann Burleigh, Vice President – Internal, for agreeing to run two of the three meetings during President Garry Browne’s absence. As you know, Garry is in Europe and we expect him back next week. Being a relatively new member of the Club, some of you may not know me; much less the fact that I am the Club’s other Vice President.
Through the Rotary Club of Makati - our sister club in the Philippines, I have been involved with Rotary for almost 12 years.
| Although Makati and Sydney are vastly different in demographics, one can find that there is a larger area of common ground versus difference, i.e. the Rotary spirit is the same worldwide. |
Speaking of the Makati Club, our International Service Committee Chair, David Smith, is organizing another visit in January to our sister clubs (now also includes Rotary Cub of Singapore) and to our microfinance project. You’ll hear more from David about this during our meeting. The reality of the developing world is such that there are stark contradictions of dynamism and emergent development on one hand, and poverty and neglect on the other. I hope we Rotarians not only campaign towards making poverty history with our project in the Northern Philippines, but also find in this crusade a great opportunity to serve others who are in need.
| Indeed, if we wish to be of better service, it’s important to possess a sense of awareness not only of our community but also of the world at large. |
This week’s speaker will do just that. He is an impressive individual whose profession requires spreading awareness on a daily basis. Dr. Phil Burgess is Group Managing Director for Public Policy and Communication of Telstra Corporation Ltd.
I am sure many of us will have questions for Dr. Burgess especially in the light of the government’s policy on deregulation. So bring all your questions and, while at that, why not also bring a friend to our lunch. See you this Tuesday.

Telecommunications services were originally controlled by the Postmaster-General's Department (PMG). On July 1, 1975, separate commissions were established by statute to replace the PMG. Responsibility for postal services was transferred to the Australian Postal Commission (Australia Post). The Australian Telecommunications Commission (ATC), trading as Telecom Australia, ran domestic telecommunication services.

‘ANZAC’ is a word with a very special place in the Australian psyche.
Mark Spencer former Rotarian and current ‘Friend of the Club’ is seeking Expressions of Interest from potential financial backers for his next exploratory maritime expedition.
Mark and his team of maritime archaeologists from the NSW Heritage Office are planning a 2008 trip to Turkey. The plan is to research the waters of Anzac Cove in an attempt to discover remnant historic artifacts from the Gallipoli landings.
The estimated cost of this project is $50,000. If you know anyone who may be willing or able to help, please contact Mark directly as per contact details below.
