The Rotary Club of Sydney invites you to join us for a very important presentation from: |
|
Creating opportunities for young people to change their world.
|
|
Join us this week to discover directly from two Beanbag Project Managers why the Rotary Club of Sydney President's Project is supporting the Inspire foundation and specifically its Beanbag Project:
|
Atari Metcalf
Beanbag Project Manager
Before joining the team at Inspire, Atari was a youth worker with Cambridge Youth Service, a Beanbag Centre in Western Australia.
Prior to this, Atari worked in freelance graphic design and at the WA AIDS Council, assisting in the development of web based mental and sexual health promotion strategies for same sex attracted and gender diverse young people.
Atari is currently completing a BSc in Health Promotion at Curtin University of Technology in Perth, WA, and is particularly passionate about meaningful youth participation, social justice and using creative technology to promote mental health and wellbeing.
Outside of work, Atari spends his time exploring Sydney, experimenting with his favourite lomo camera, Holga, and drinking good soy chai! |
Jo Degney
Beanbag Project Manager
Jo is the Beanbag Program Manager working with a network of community and youth centres around Australia to engage young people through creative technologies.
Jo has a BA (English) and prior to joining Inspire worked in the University sector, focusing on work-based learning and international program development.
Jo is passionate about exploring ways to make learning relevant and interesting for young people.
Outside of work, Jo indulges her affection for rock biographies, exceptionally loud music, cupcakes, siestas, and her dog Rambo.

Inspiration and Perspiration Deliver Absolute Passion
In considering our theme for this week I thought hard about similarities between APEC and our speakers from Inspire.
I wondered if there were any similarities between APEC & Inspire and discovered one key aspect.
|
While both are successful in bringing communities together they are executing it in totally different ways. |
|
In terms of outcomes and effectiveness, one organisation will continue to direct its vast resources to deliver outcomes within a long term framework. The other will struggle to raise funds, will punch above its weight and will deliver for its stakeholders in a shorter period of time.
Big Goals: Small Budgets
Rotary works to achieve Big Hairy Goals with small budgets. We work with governments and with NGO’s to deliver outcomes that will be sustainable for the future. Some projects take longer than others.
This week I received an eight page email from District with hundreds of projects in the Asia Pacific region that require funding in terms of dollars and in terms of Rotarian’s time. These projects range from the building schools in Philippines to helping outback communities. All appear to be worthwhile and deliver real outcomes at the coal face for communities in need.
Aussies on Poverty Line
Also this week I’m sure many of you have heard reports that the number of Australian’s on the poverty line has increased significantly over the last 10 years.
These are the real issues and concerns that need to be addressed and this is Rotary’s mantra. We must work closely with Government to assist those in need. Rotary should be represented in the APEC forums in some way.
| My question is how can we encourage Government to seek our support and help them deliver what we only know too well? |
Rotary can help in resolving these problems and projects. This is one of our key success factors; we have to continue to promote our strengths as an organisation and communicate we are an organisation that can make dreams of those in need come true.
Rotary is very good at working at the coalface mustering resources and ensuring the projects that are started are completed.
There are many worthwhile projects both locally and internationally, Polio Plus is an outstanding example of one on a global basis.
Be Inspired!
Come and listen to our speakers this Tuesday who will inspire you, help you appreciate what needs to be done in our community when it comes to helping young people realise their potential. It’s a powerful message.
Rotary has the real potential to make a difference. We have the passion and we have the people. We need to spread the passion and encourage others to share the spirit and pride of being a Rotarian.

Congratulations Lynn Ralph
For the first time in many years our current exchange student is being hosted exclusively by our club members.
Last week, Thomas, our Danish exchange student, made a fantastic welcome speech to the Club. We learned about his interests in cars, sailing, watches, and hunting - so if you share these interests, why not invite him to join you on an outing!
Please contact Thomas directly (0401 531 671) or via his Counsellor, Bruce Edwards.
We should also acknowledge the fact that, for the first time in many years, our exchange student will be hosted for the entire year by Club members:
|
Thank you:
Sue & Frank Davidson Ted & Alison McKeown Natalie & David Begg Diana Richards & Tom
|
Youth Committee Chairman Indy Singh said, "Lynn's passion for this amazing Rotary program and her work in promoting the benefits of hosting exchange students has paid off for our club. We are lucky to have Lynn."

Oxfam is a development, relief, and campaigning organisation that works with others to overcome poverty and suffering around the world.
|
We have been asked to assist in finding members willing to billet Oxfam Partners who are in Sydney for three nights between 27-30 Sept.
They are here to participate in a Skills Development Program between Sept. 30 and October 8. They are young people aged 18-25.
If you are able to help please contact Jessica Miller on jessicam@oxfam.org.au
|
A reward is offered for anyone reading this section of the newsletter and also attending our meeting.
To prove you have read the newsletter (and have the aptitude to be a Rotarian!) you will need to correctly answer the following question in trivia:
|
Who first suggested the continent be named ‘Australia’ instead of ‘New Holland’?
a. Dame Edna b. Captain James Cook c. Sir Francis Drake d. Matthew Flinders |
See you for lunch. |
