2R Champions
|
New 4th Div recruit Gordon displays his lethal
combination of pace, agility and ball control.
|
The 2R team has completed its home and away season on the top of their table, and with only one loss for the season they have earned their rest this weekend.
Our 3A has won yet again, and in a big way with a perfect 4-0 result.
The big news for the weekend is the club's newest team that had a double header victory beating the ferrocious Northside Monash and the leafy Lindfielders. The team now has another double headed weekend against the top two teams at the traditional Longueville home of football.
The weekend was capped off with a win by the 2A & 4R teams on Saturday, while a double penalty for the 4R team on Sunday did not yield a score. The 3R team simply enjoyed the sunshine!

2R Match Report
Match Report
Minors Premiers, St Michael’s 2Rs
Round 14: St Michael’s 0 – Lindfield 0 Howson Oval
You ask, what is our aim? I can answer in one word. It is victory! Victory at all costs! Victory in spite of all terrors. Victory, however long and hard the road may be, for without victory there is no survival.
Winston Churchill. |
Not only was Churchill was a talented orator, he also was able to foresee the future. In 1940, few would have comprehended the enormity of the achievements of the St Michael’s mighty 2Rs 69 years later! Even today, the true significance of this accomplishment is yet to bring the ringing endorsements for all connected with this endeavour. Your correspondent understands that Premiership Winning Captain Goodman [PWCG], a veritable Nureyev with the round ball, was fielding calls from Seb Blatter and Guus Hiddinck asking about how they hop on the bandwagon. Too late! Many are called but few are chosen.
|
The determined face of victory.
|
So it was with some trepidation at 12.55 pm that I glanced at the erstwhile perennial “Pom on Holidays” fashionista [37 different ways to include your England football jersey in your man about town casual wardrobe], Hughsie, and counted 9 players ready to take the field in five minutes for the championship deciding round. At that very moment I had an auditory epiphany…the sound of the shotty English shooter on his shitty Chinese Scotter with a Japanese cardiac transplant. For those unfamiliar with this 2 stroke symphony, it sounds like your first memory of your Grandfather’s lawn mower struggling up a grass covered hill. Ten and then the third of the English midfield trio, Steve “Yes, Hilly, that is real leather in the jacket” Smith roared around the corner on his majestic 125cc hog. Late reinforcements from the mother country, as Churchill would have mused. Reminds me more of Gallipoli.
Kitted up and with some nervous enthusiasm, the team gathered for the traditional prematch pep talk from PWCG with support from a very animated “Alexi” Sayle who mentioned that another weekly milestone beckoned; 2070 minutes in goal without defeat should we win or draw today. Nodding of heads, murmurs of agreement and the sight of Stewart “Gaffa Tape” Wewege warming up bode well for the game. What better news than the arrival of Pete Grantham, presumably just back from a 40km kayak trip and a warm up game of soccer masquerading as a very mature under 15s player for St Lucy’s special school in Wahroonga, and “Soft” Jock Kearney, who “couldn’t leave his girls in the lurch”. A number of replies crossed your correspondent’s mind at this moment, but in a moment of unlikely restraint, I turned and quietly assumed my position at right fullback.
So to the first half highlights……Well we began with some moments of enthusiasm, several potential opportunities went close and there were several villains in this regard. From an excellent R-O-H-E-A-T “scorching” free kick the ball lobbed to the roaming right fullback who found himself the recipient of the cross only to muff an opportunity to make significant contact and, despite Hughsie lunging at the back post the ball rolled out for a goal kick. Never one to be far from the action, Matt “Tommy Radonikis Conditioning & Training Manual” Middleton [MTRTMM] made several incisive runs and had shots which threatened all but our opposing goalie. A series of corners were well struck by PWCG and MTRTMM which were probably unlucky not to get more purchase from the tall timber attacking including Marc “Ray Martin’s toupee” Bineham, Chris “Voltaren” Tucker, Bish “Clare Valley Merlot” Bodjak and of course the ubiquitous Hughsie. Special mention should go to “Soft Jock”, whose return from a 2 game self-imposed exile on General Rambuka’s democratic island paradise inspired others to pass to him and he nearly rewarded the faithful with some great runs and shots. So by half time at 0-0 it had become apparent that we had the run of play, the majority of the shots, lacked finish and could show some more composure on the ball. The defence was stable without being spectacular and their chances were really basically form chip and chase scenarios. More commitment to the challenge would bring rewards in the second half. 2025 minutes and “Alexi” Sayle was still animated.
|
The determined face of victory II.
|
The second half was notable for its consistently mediocre calibre of play. The chances came and went from corners, free kicks and several nicely strung passes on this ground. However, there were two moments of the extremely rare condition of Premature Transient Championship Celebration Psychosis [PTCCP] which gripped our keeper “Alexi”. This condition, which I have only read about as fine print in textbooks, represents a disordered thought process by which the keeper is unable to discern who to pass the ball to when not under any pressure and so, in order to fill an emotional need for an adrenaline rush, he typically gifts the ball to the opposing centre forward despite the directions of his backs and then feigns any knowledge of the instruction. This condition is not always terminal for there are cases of “spontaneous” recovery reported, generally after an earful from one or more of his fullbacks. Relapses are known and are universally fatal in more ways than one. Nonetheless, 2070 minutes achieved without loss between the goalposts- Well done “Alexi”.
So, in the end the 0-0 result was enough to gain us a point and an unassailable lead on the points table. Minor Premiers indeed! Later in the day we learnt of other results which made today’s result unnecessary for the premiership. During the post-game celebrations with a bottle of “Cold Duck” sprayed over teammates by PWCG and Peroni beers, players looked sheepishly at one another when considering the man of the match points as they clearly struggled to find an excuse to award anyone more than one point. Familiar calls of R-O-H-I-T came from the usual source, himself.
However, the battle of the minds has begun as we have a 2 week wait to play again and try to get into the right mindset to be a force in the finals. As is becoming traditional, a strategy session will be held on Wednesday night at an alternate training venue. During that time, we will reflect on more words from Churchill: “I have nothing to offer but blood, toil, tears and sweat”. Next round please and roll on the finals.

4A Match Report
Wow, a 6 point weekend, with two good wins. Saturday was particularly exciting. Northside Monash, dominated the first 20 plus minutes and Phil Irvine, playing his first game in a couple of months, and first game in goals for a couple of years, stared. Finally, Dave Coote scored one of his trade mark goals, hitting a ball from the edge of the box over the keepers head. Then 5 mins later he passed the ball over the top of the defence. Their keeper came running out but Richard Bailey juts got his foot to the ball first to put it the back of the net.
At half time we were quite upbeat, a good stirring speech from Steve Green to keep up the good work from the back end of the quarter. 10 minutes into the second half and we were back to 2 – 2. Their keeper from the fist half started playing up front and scored both goals. Then the game went back our way. Dave Coote hit another cracker 10m outside the box – goal. We continued the pressure and Dave Vokes ran onto a ball coming back out of their box, took a deflection off one their blokes faces and scored his first goal of his
life. Steve Cox had started up front but we put him back to mark their 2 goal scorer and we managed to keep him quite, but they did manage to get one back.
Sunday, was a wet and cold day, with sore bodies and the rain coming down. It was a very even game, as was our last game against Lindfield. Yet again they managed to hit the wood work a couple of times, and yet again we kept them scoreless. It was pleasing to see that Phil had a lot less work to do, which was pleasing giving Steve Green was carrying a calf injury. It was a case of Deja Vu with the game heading for an inevitable draw but our latest 35 year old Gordon managed to steal a 1 – 0 win with 3 minutes remaining.
A good result for the team all around.
Mike B.
