Season 2009 Round 10 - 13th June
|
|
Reign Continues
|
Ball control by Richard from the 3R team.
|
The 2R team extended its lead at the top of their table with an emphatic victory over a lackluster Lane Cove team.
The 4R team returned to the top 4 and the 4A team's win combined some superb football skills (mainly from the backs) while a draw by the 3A team has them focussing on a top 4 position.
Qualifying for the 2R team remains open however applicants must display a strong grasp of rhyme and prose, and also be able to play football! This week's 3A report is one for the talent scouts!
A solid weekend of performances with 3 wins, 1 draw and 2 losses. The goal score being balanced with 11 For and 11 Against.
As Blackman park is closed this evening practice has been transferred to your TV screen!

Once again the weather was fine, the air crisp and cold. St Michael’s arrived in good cheer, some in full gear, others in last season’s attire. As usual most arrived in good time, some were late but it mattered not. We numbered 14 or 15 in the end, with a couple of absentees, and took up our usual positions ready for the off.
As is customary on these occasions it was quite a slow start by all concerned. Never let it be said that St Michael’s do not pace themselves, no matter what the occasion. Mark “Alexi” Sayle tried to up the tempo a notch with some hearty gestures and implored the boys to put a bit more effort in. Team captain for the day, our custodian had his hands full throughout in ensuring everyone was in the right place at the right time. However, not for the first time this season, it was the performance of Ian Hill who set an example to us all and really got the ball rolling. Always an excellent communicator, being clear in his instructions without saying too much, he had at least half the team hanging on his every word by the halfway point.
As we turned around for the restart things started warming up. Hughesie started to put himself about in a big way, and could be seen hurtling from one end of the playing surface to the other, going in for challenges he had no right to contest, let alone win. A few controversial moments ensued but that is the mark of a midfield warrior. Still going strong as we entered extra-time he was my man of the match, closely, if unsteadily, followed by Bish.
Mention should go to Wayne who put on a brave show after the unfortunate sniper incident of the previous weekend. He showed up in good spirits and lasted for about an hour before retreating to a more withdrawn role slightly away from the main action. At this point gaps started to appear through the middle; this was the key moment for someone, anyone, to unite the boys once more and see us through to the finish. And it was that man Hilly again who provided the coup de grace, ensuring an unforgettable end to a fine display by stepping aside at the last minute and instead furnishing us all with a generous tribute to our very own Shitty Chinese Scotter….
It was something of a case of after the Lord Mayor’s Show three days later. Our bogey side came and were dispatched to the tune of 3-0 in a victory that can best be described as ‘routine’. A common word to describe a mundane, one-sided event in the higher echelons of football. For it to be used to describe a St Michaels win over the Cove is evidence of how far we have come this season, and how far ahead the road could take us. The Shitty one nodded back a corner for Marc Bineham to remind us why he terms himself a ‘back’ (rugby term, for the uneducated), as he propelled the ball over the line whilst facing towards the centre-circle. The one with the Mido’s touch did not turn everything to goal today despite his claims, as a skewed shot from the corner flag turned into a decent cross that the hapless Cove ‘back’ lashed into his own net on the full.
The game was sealed with 30 minutes to go when a cross from the right invited Jock to emulate the OG of earlier and he did so with aplomb. Alexi put the seal on things with two fine saves late on, and a clean sheet ensured the beer would have tasted even sweeter had it not already been El Salvador’s finest.
4 regular season games to go, 5 points clear at the top, another Wednesday-Saturday double-(sore) header looms, another totally unpredictable side awaits us. Onwards and upwards….

3A Match Report
June 13th v. West Pymble 2 St Michaels 2
|
The 3A team focussing on a top 4 position.
|
Like Rudd & Swanny, there’s no talk of the ‘R’ word among the management ranks of Div 3A. Granted, there is some quantitative evidence to suggest other teams, many other teams, have fashioned stronger platforms from which to launch survival bids, but our eyes remain firmly on a top four finish and a landmark grand final victory. For St Michaels, and for football.
After a string of improbable defeats, our dream run to the finals was launched with 2-1 road-tip win in the badlands of Hornsby RSL. Momentum was ours and West Pymble were to be scalped with an ash plant.
The team of 2008, unstoppable until we stopped, has been reinforced with a steely spine. A real goalie (sorry Wombat! Are you still on these emails?) JR, an Englishman who can play football (there is one!) and RF, the only Italian tank I know without a reverse gear.
And indeed the new spine was in the guts of things this weekend.
During pre-season, Tank had carefully studied the St Michaels way – our faith, our football philosophy and our proud disciplinary record. Fiercely competitive, Tank has pursued that disciplinary record with gusto and is well placed to set a new benchmark. After 60 minutes battering a crowed West Pymble midfield, a polite word of advice to the black cloth drew a second yellow, delivered with an extravagant flourish that betrayed sectarianism.
JR had an even more eventful day.
Linesman duty roster, as is so often the case with the 3R’s, involved 90 minutes in central midfield. Thereafter, a composed but somewhat weary first 45 minutes ended with an extremely weary square ball meeting an unintended target - the head of their striker as it happens. Spectacularly failing to recover the situation was The Real Goalie. And so an early lead, courtesy of The Kid, was nullified by half-time. A game which should have been settled was back in the balance.
In the most symmetrical of second-half openings, JR wearily drove a neat finish past the hapless WP keeper to restore our lead. But rather than press home our advantage, persistent collective lapses allowed WP another equalizer, as the White Carl Lewis exposed our right flank by taking a 45 minute conference call. And to cap an eventful 178 minutes for the English footballer, late in the game a deliberate trip, notable for being executed with an upper, not lower, limb enticed the now visibly aroused referee into pulling out a straight red, and further even the contest to 9 against 11.
Two minutes playing a 7-1-0 formation ensured a draw and 2 points lost.
A finals berth now 8 and not 6 points away. 6 games to go. We’re still every chance.
Quietly Confident

4A Match Report
A much deserved win on Saturday, 2 – 1 against Wahroonga, if not a convincing win. We seemed to dominate possession, field position, we created opportunities but didn’t get the goals. Well done to Steve Green for some great tackles where he clearly missed the ball, but managed not to get a yellow card.
Happy 35th birthday and welcome also to our new recruit and mid fielder Gordon who added to our youthful approach and our average skill level.
On the weekend Berowra won 4 – 1 against Lindfield, Lane Cove 5 – Northside Monash 3, and Mt Colah 4 – West Pymble 0. We are now on 10 points equal with Berowra and Lindfield, but we are 5th on for and against.
