Anyone would think I was smokin’ rope if I told them that at the final match of the Round Robin Series that the Jolly Roger would be flying and there would be a Calypso Band bangin out Montego Bay – that is, if they hadn’t been there themselves to witness it first hand!
The scene was set, on an absolutely splendid day at Kingsford Smith, for the ghosts of previous encounters between Hornsby RSL and St Michaels to be exorcised. The Pirates had proven to be the best team in the competition this year. They were a shoe in for the finals. They had beaten us 5 – 1 at Kingsford Smith in the 1st round and we had our first win of the season in the 2nd round against them winning 2-1. They came 1st – we came 4th.
An ill wind then did blow. The toss was won and the temperature dropped from a balmy 25 degrees to about 15 degrees. Then during the toss the Pirates Captain turned to Ian (his doppelganger) and asked if we would be happy for a 1 all draw – we could do it all again the next weekend. It was a trick reminiscent of the Captain Barbossa – tell them the treasure was buried somewhere else while you go and dig it up yourself in the real location.
Normally we would have acquiesced – but this time Ian looked like he was possessed. I turned around and all my teammates had the same look – Martin even looked like he had an eye patch. As the ball was kicked off all the Pirates seemed to be skeletons. Within 1 minute a cross came in from Martin and Rick slotted away a headed at the speed of a cannonball.
Whatever had possessed us had an effect for about 25 minutes. Brendan with the dexterity of an Able Seaman, neutralized the Pirates attacking weapon on the left. Maurice steered the ship like Jack Sparrow. And Robbie in goals was catching any bomb they could throw at us.
Our midfield was cutting up their halves and defence with a cutlass – then out of nowhere the pressure that Simon was putting on the defence resulted in an own goal. 2 nil to St Michaels.
Then the band piped up – playing Montego Bay and whatever had possessed us seemed to have desserted us. The Pirates were on the ascendancy for the next 15 minutes but the boys under the decks seemed to keep baling us out. Half time came for a change in strategy.
Back on the field, the wind blew up against us. Within a minute the Pirates were awarded a penalty for an accidental hand ball in the box. They scored to take the scores to 2 – 1 St Michaels.
Then it happened again. At the kick off I turned around and the crew were possessed. Normally we would have capitulated but not this time. The Pirates became skeletons and we were off to get the Treasure. They’d obviously lost their brains as well – they started to try to win by threading impossible short passes through the midfield that could easily be picked off. The next goal was the result of foul play in the penalty area. Robbie steadied the ship and knocked the ball in the right corner of the goal. 3 – 1 to St Michaels.
The Pirates kept with their game plan that was seeing them get picked off one by one. Then the Goal Sneak rifled a shot into the net 4 –1 to St Michaels.
