Massive Newsletter Catch-Up!
Forgive your editor, we have been offline while dealing with significant judiciary issues over the last few weeks, and it is pertinent to explain that GDSFA has a Zero Tolerance policy for both the use of offensive language and for any type of attack or dissent regarding referees.
This means exactly as it sounds – there is no tolerance and no acceptable explanation for this kind of offence.
Many of you wonder where the referees are. The answer is that they are having difficulty retaining their numbers in the face of the abuse they receive from parents and players disputing calls they have made to the best of their ability. Until every club supports them, until every parent takes responsibility for their own actions and the words from their mouths their numbers are likely to drop further.
Meanwhile the U15’s have put 8 of their players through the referee’s course. We all congratulate them! Should any of these young people choose to actually referee some of the junior games, not only will they earn some decent pocket money, but they increase the chance of the Club having a referee for the one before and after theirs. This happens as the referee’s association ensures a senior ref is available to mentor the junior one, and that person is likely to make the most of it and cover the match before and after as well. So, the best thing you can do to increase the referee numbers is to become one, or encourage your family members to become one!
When, and if they do, or any of our current U15 players do, St Michael’s will protect them by continuing to educate players, parents, Ground Officials and Coaches on their responsibilities, and take action where we must. It’s only a game. Play it.
SORCERER’S APPRENTICE NEEDED
We have an opening for someone to assist with Purchasing for the Club. The purchasing is done for the Canteens, and includes lollies, drinks, sausages, eggs, bread and milk. Ivan Stepic is currently doing it, and we need to have someone step in with him, after some training. We’ll stick with our current suppliers initially, however you’ll have the chance to change to whoever is more convenient for you later. You need a little time flexibility so that deliveries can be made to the club house, but t is not a huge time involvement, just a few hours a week. Please contact Ivan (0428 664 310) and arrange to meet him to see what is needed before you make up your mind.

Here we go....the reason you actually read this.......and my apologies it has taken so long!
Round 11
10/6 v Rouse Hill Rams
Win 2 - 0
A sunny day greeted us for a change and with no reserves we knew we would have a tough game against good opposition. The game started off with some end to end attacks but just a few minutes into the game, Rouse Hill snuck the ball to the left of our diving keeper to grab a 1-0 lead. Our Knights showed their never say die attitude and kept attacking down both sides of the field with some good runs from Matt and the two Jacobs up front. They peppered the goals but the Rams keeper was up to the challenge, for now. The raids continued and finally, after a great run from Al beating 4 defenders, he got a shot away that stretched the back of the net and left the Rams keeper standing still. 1-1. Jackson Bryce and Courtney joined in with great runs with the ball and passes, but after another 4 good chances were either saved or went wide, we went to half time at 1-1.
The second half started much the same way as the 1st half ended with our courageous Knights on the attack. Finally the ball fell to Jacob V not far outside the penalty box, Jacob won 2 strong challenges and ended up one on one with the keeper who was rushing out at him, Jacob stretched out, just enough to get his toe to the ball and poked it past him into the net. 2-1 "Come on Ref Blow it up". We still had 10 minutes to go, no reserves on a heavy soggy ground and our opponents had 3 reserves they were rotating bringing on fresh legs time and time again. Our Knights started to tire but never gave up. The Rams started to turn the game around and went on raid after raid. Tulizo, Stephen, Sophie and Mark had to work tirelessly in those last few minutes to try and keep the Rams at bay. Even with all their hard work the Rams had a couple of good chances, including 2 one ones with our keeper Jackson, who made some great saves and managed to keep the Rams out. Bryce really came to the fore in the second half and turned up at the back when needed and set the sideline on fire with 3 great runs after pinching the ball from the opposition who was hot on the attack. Finally the ref blew the whistle and our heart rates returned to normal. Great game team.
Knight of the Round – Bryce
Encouragement - Jackson
12/1 v CHU White
Draw 1- 1
This week the boys came up against an improving side in our competition. The boys had the opportunity to show how they had improved also, but started a bit flat which gave the opposition a chance to cause us problems. The boys seemed to have forgotten the often repeated coaching adage...get to the ball first...allowing the opposition to get first touch and take control of the ball.
From the outset both teams battled hard and the ball travelled in both directions. Then the opposition caught our defence off guard and ran a ball deep into our defence which resulted in a goal. With a half time reminder by the coach to get to the ball first, some advice on passing and a general gee up, the boys played much better in the second half and were rewarded with a goal by Brent to level the score. William earned KOTR with his dominance of the midfield and Brady the EA for his defence work in spite of being sick during the week.
Overall, this week may serve as a reminder that no team stays the same each week (including us) and that next week we will arrive ready to play exceptional soccer...and get to the ball first!
KOTR: William
Encouragement Award: Brady
Round 12
12/1 v Rage
Loss 1-2
What an exciting, tense game of football between the Knights and Rage. In the first half the Knights were all over the Rage, committing to tackles and showing great offense. The Knights were on the attack with Matt getting a great through ball and putting it away easily. The Knights were leading 1-0 at half time. What a fantastic effort!
In the second half the Knights lost their focus for a short time giving away 2 goals to the Rage. They then regained their composure and contested every ball. The Knights had the Rage worried right up until the final whistle, but it wasn't enough to win the game.
All players gave their heart and soul and showed great commitment. Ashleigh showed great spirit, fighting an injury. Thomas had a fantastic game in goals, Nathan held out the Rage with his solid defence and Brady was awesome cleaning up magnificently as sweeper. WELL DONE to the whole team, you really showed what you are made off!
14/3 v Auburn
Loss 1 - 5
Initially St Michael’s were playing as a focused, smooth-running machine. Passes were crisp and well directed and we kept formation. Then, in a moment, the tide changed. A mundane attack resulted in a little bobble, then disaster! Five minutes later another was scored and heads went down.
The second half started with positive play and SMK looked like we were heading for a comeback. Andrew scored and the tempo ramped up again. Sitting in the beautiful sun, the BBQ tantalising the nostrils, the weekend stretched out in front of us all and the bleak first half seemed insignificant. Sorry readers, the SMK train was then unceremoniously derailed as Auburn scored again. In surreal ‘TV ad’ fashion, SMK permitted the one Auburn player who scored to complete his triple-hat-trick by gifting the ball back to him in each of their following kick-offs. 5 – 1! I’m not sure if we are going to see anyone summoning up a smile in the team photo taken after this rout.
U8 White v Kellyille
Loss 0- 7
We turned up on a very foggy morning at Bernie Mullane. It's hard enough to find the correct field there at the best of times, let alone with the extra challenge of fog!! The mighty U8 Whites started off with all guns blazing. They came under pressure but repelled attack after attack. Lachlan showed the goalkeeping training hasn't been a waste with some great saves. Noah has been a revelation at fullback and he doesn't take a backward step. It was hard to get down the other end of the park but Nicholas and Patrick certainly made a good fist of it. We went into half-time 0-2 down and still well in the game.
Taliah took over goalkeeping duties in the second half and some of her goal kicks were huge!! We were under pressure but Aidan and Andrew pulled off some great tackles to save us time and again. Michael's deft little touches on the ball were pretty to watch. Unfortunately Nicholas and Patrick sustained injuries but were tough enough to soldier on and finish the game. We weren't able to grab a goal but certainly did our best. Coach Darren was very proud of our efforts. Well done, kids!!!
Knight of the Round - Aidan
Encouragement Award – Patrick
11/5 v North Rocks
Draw 0 – 0
Our boys played this game with only 8 players against a full team with 3 subs, but you would never have known it!
We were under some pressure in attack to begin with, but our defence covered well. Josh K, Nathan & Jackson held strong in defence & forced several errors by the opposition in their attacking line. Thomas & Asel had some great passing runs in attack.
We had some great runs in attack & several attempts at goal in the 2nd half. Thomas, Asel, Adam, Dominic & Jackson all played a part in this great attacking effort. Nathan also made a fantastic run from the back line all the way to take a shot at goal just minutes from the end of the game.

Knight of the round went to Adam who was Jack of all trades – putting in a great effort in attack & also switching to defence in the 2nd half. The encouragement award went to Nathan who was rock solid in defence all game. Thanks to Jordan for great job in goals once again.
The boys really did play ‘out of their skins’ (to quote coach Kelvin) & did us all extremely proud in this game. Even though the score was a nil all draw, the Knights certainly looked like winners all game. This game was truly a joy to watch!
Round 13
14/3 v Guildford
Loss 0 – 3
Within 5 minutes SMK were down 1 – nil as GFC effectively lobbed a direct free kick over the wall and the goalie’s fingertips. While we are getting better each game in producing clean, crisp passes our chances to score in this one were minimal and Guildford made the most of their few opportunities. Andrew was the most inspiring to watch today and we clearly missed the strike power of a couple of key forwards. Hopefully next week we’ll lift ourselves out of a mid-season slump!
Senior 7 v Winston Hills
Loss 2 – 6
Our largest lost in 14 years! But certainly not a game to be ashamed of. After a tough few weeks of upheaval due to an abandoned match and a visit to the tribunal, appendectomies, wet weather, several on overseas travels and season ending injuries for two more the 10 players left who took to the field played hard.
Winsto had a full team and reserves but it felt like we were outnumbered 2 to 1. It was exhausting watching the brave efforts against a confident team deserving their near top-of-the table position. Glen had his toughest spell ever in goals. Shortly into the first half he was unlucky to make ball contact, only to see it slew with momentum into the left corner. Play continued for the rest of the first half without further goals. We were on top, and a missed direct in the box cost us as badly.
Ryan (the spare McGovern) was a welcome sight on the field as he managed a rare escape from work. His deft footwork and tenacity won the midfield balls repeatedly.
The second half saw the increased troop numbers and holes in our side exposed. A contentious call on Tim’s scrupulous defence resulted in a goal to Winsto. Glen gathered the ball another time only to have it kicked from his possession. At three nil down Wayne scored a beauty, thumping it waist-high down the centre, and Ryan kicked a screamer (from half-way? Or am I exaggerating? It was a looong way out!).
Winsto cleaned up after that, but the Marmee Army were all very proud of the total commitment displayed today.
Next week it looks like we might be even lower on troops…surely it couldn’t be as cold…not that the players will have a chance to notice.
11/5 v OLOR
Loss 0 - 4
From the outset our boys were under pressure in defence. Josh, Jackson & Nathan held strong on the defensive line, but were under constant attack. We had a few good runs in attack with Thomas & Asel combining well. Tom had a nice attempt at goal in the first half after a great run up wide. Unfortunately the constant attack from OLOR meant they had 2 goals in by half time.
The 2nd half continued much the same as the first, with the boys under constant pressure. Tom made another great run in attack along the full length of the field. Dominic, Asel & Luke made some nice passes up the line, but we just couldn’t manage to get a score on the board. Our team put in a valiant effort, but were simply unable to fend off the constant attack by the competition & another 2 goals being scored against them.
This was a great effort considering we had only 10 players, while the opposition had the pick of their team of 15.
Thanks to Jordan & Adam for their gallant efforts in goals. Adam successfully defended a great penalty shot at goal in the 2nd half.
Knight of the round went to Dominic who made some great passing in getting the ball into attack. The encouragement award went to Alex who did a great job & lots of running around in the midfield.
12/4 v Rydalmere FC
Draw 2- 2
After a week off with a bye, everyone was keen to get back on the field, and after eventually finding the opposition at our away home ground, and organising a ref, again (thanks Gerard!!!), we started. Off to a brilliant start with a bursting run and passing down the side, the ball eventually found Harry’s foot and soon after the back of the net 1-0 up after 2 minutes, but then Rydalmere woke up and it was game on. A constant struggle of control at both ends, and late in the half our tiring midfield failed to cover a counter attack and Rydalmere equalised, 1-1 at half time.
The second half was a tight contest, seeing us defending tightly and finding it hard to work the ball up field, until a break from Harry and a great pass to Mitchell who took it all the way to the keeper and finished it off with a great strike, 2-1 and we looked like getting our first win for 4 games, but our players were tiring, Nathan took a ball in the face for the team but didn’t flinch and carried on regardless, then a scramble in front of our goal after a corner saw the dribble over the line 2-2. Only 2 minutes left, and though all tried, there was not enough time to regain the lead.
Knight of the Round –Hazza
Encouragement Award - Nathan
