Easts Rugby Union Club (formerly Mayfield East)was founded in the shadows of thr BHP Steelworks in Newcastle in 1941 by the father of two young boys who were not allowed to play for their local club because they went to the "wrong" school. The father told the young brothers to sign up all their mates from school and the rest were made up from a section of the suburb called "Pommy Town",which was a street full of English immigrants who were bought to Australia to fill managerial roles at the BHP.Needless to say the new boys were quite competitive and it only took three weeks of undefeated play for the coach of the original team who knocked them back to make an effort to poach these players.
The club gradually expanded and became the biggest sporting club in Newcastle fielding teams in Rugby, cricket, baseball, netball, vigaro and softball. This all changed with the outbreak of World War 2 when 98 members of the club enlisted to protect and serve their country.
Since this time both the Junior and Senior club has struggled but survived amongst other more glamourous clubs with licenced clubs to support them.
Easts being a typical working class club and being from a poor socioeconomic area has always prided itself on being a family club which provided a safe, cheap and friendly environment for young sportspeople to grow and develop not only in sport but also in life.To this end the club has always been very active in the local community to embrace the cultures of the many Indigenous,Greek and Pacific Islands heritaged players who have represented the club.Indeed in the last few years the club has raised funds and donated goods to Fiji and in 2009 to Samoa after the recent devastating tsunami.
Our club is currently looking for sponsorship to provide Rugby jumpers, shorts amd socks for our newest members in the Under 6's and Under 8's as we have attempted to heavily subsidise their registration($60)to make our sport less of a financial burden to families in these challenging times both financially and promoting participation in sport for young children.
