Dragon boating is one of the oldest sports in the world - simply, a long canoe-like boat is powered by a team of paddlers working together. From the social nature of recreational paddling to the competitiveness of racing, this sport has something for everyone.
Te Waka Taniwha (Te Waka - the boat, Taniwha - dragon in Maori) was formed in 2000 by group of friends wanting to revel in the sport's social nature. Originally located on the Gold Coast, the club moved to north to Brisbane in 2002. Since then training has been based on the Brisbane River with crews departing from Breakfast Creek -only 5kms from Brisbane CBD.
In 2007, an influx of new members saw the club and its committee reinvigorated, so with a new lease on life the club has seen membership numbers grow and new boats and equipment acquired. In 2010 to accommodate members who live on the Gold Coast, the club established pod training sessions at Surfers Paradise. Today, the club is proud to be one of Queensland's top teams and represent the sport of dragon boating to the wider community.
Committed to team work, training and good doses of laughter Te Waka Dragons has built up a strong reputation among the Queensland dragon boating community. In the spirit of its foundation members, Te Waka promotes enjoyment of the sport through its regular training sessions, community events and attendance at regattas.
We aim to provide a club which allows everyone in the community to participate in this fun water sport. Our membership represents a variety of cultures, age groups and backgrounds, as well as levels of experience (from beginners to race squad). While the social paddlers take in the sights, the race squad focuses on technique and endurance in preparation for the increasingly competitive local, state and national regattas.
Te Waka competes in all three dragon boating categories - ladies, mens and mixed teams - and across all race distances - 200m, 500m, 1000m and 2000m. The club has become increasing competitive in recent years, with great results at both State and National Level. Our results at the 2011 Queensland State Titles held at Kawana Waters in March are the best in the club's history. Our Australian National Titles Campaign successfully gained us qualification for the 2012 World Club Crew Championships in Hong Kong.
Our contingent of 41 paddlers arrived in Canberra for the 2011 Australian National Championships, only 10 days after a successful Queensland State Titles campaign, ready to carry on with our "IT'S TIME" campaign to qualify for 2012 World Club Crew Championships.
Before the club competition began, our largest number of Te Wakans ever (34) represented Queensland in Junior, Premier, Masters & Grand Masters categories in the State v State Day, proving to be a very successful campaign with all our representatives returning home with a medal.
In the club competition, our Open Men’s, Women’s & Mixed 20's teams competed in three distances, 200m, 500m & 2000m and our Masters Mixed 10's team competed in two distances 200m & 500m for the following results:
• Premier Mixed 20's 200m Silver
• Premier Mixed 20's 500m Silver
• Premier Open 20's 2000m Gold
• Masters Mixed 10's 200m Gold
• Masters Mixed 10's 500m Gold
We have had official notification that we have qualified in both Premier Open, Premier Mixed 20’s & Masters Mixed 10’s divisions to compete at the World Club Crew Championship to be held in Hong Kong in August 2012.
Now for the next phase of our campaign "AND IT BEGINS"....
Our fundraising began in earnest once we arrived home from Canberra as 9 of our members had been selected in the Australian Auroras Squad to compete in World Championships in Tampa in July 2011 and has now continued into this campaign with 35 club members to making the trip to Hong Kong in July 2012.
Te Waka is keen to establish long standing relationships with like-minded sponsors and encourage them to visit our website www.tewakadragons.org for more details on our club or email admin@tewakadragons.org or call 0417 584 184.
