Waverley Hockey Club was formed at an informal meeting on October 30, 1958. We have just celebrated our 50th anniversary.

In February 1964, the club was renamed the “Waverley Hockey Club”. The first junior team was entered in 1961. In 1969 the Waverley Women’s Hockey Club was formed. The men’s and women’s clubs operated separately but co-operatively from 1969, until their amalgamation in 1980.

Waverley is one of the largest and consistently successful hockey clubs in Victoria
We base our success on the quality of our facilities, a strong relationship with the City of Monash, support from local businesses, good coaching, sound administration and the considerable involvement of members and parents.

Having consistent success in the State League 1 competitions, together with the players who presently play for the club and represent Australia in international competition, the magnetic effect of this success is drawing juniors from a large area to be part of it. At present we are proud to have a member, Luke Doerner, playing in the men's national team, the Kookaburras and Stacia Joseph playing in the women's national team, the Hockeyroos. Through it's proud history, Waverley Hockey Club has had 14 of its members represent Australia.

Our success and promotion of the sport has attracted players from many suburbs of Melbourne. Through the Waverley senior men’s and women’s teams, veteran’s teams, junior teams, schools, visiting teams, casual ground users the weekly total of people that pass through the gate of our facility exceeds 1600. Growth is occurring rapidly, with our playing membership aged between 5 (our Minkey Programme) and 83 (our veterans programs)

In 2009 we had 324 junior playing members coming from 57 surrounding suburbs, and 211 senior playing members coming from 77 suburbs.

Our facility is used 12 months of the year. In 2009 269 competition matches were played at the Waverley Hockey Ground, and the club played in 624 matches.
The Waverley Hockey Club has a lease with council on its present facility that expires in 2021 with a 15 year option.

The club is responsible for maintenance and upgrade of the ground and repairing the surface and refitting the club rooms.

In the next two years the club is planning to replace the lights to enable high level games be played at night. At present the lighting is inadequate for this.

The surface of the ground was replaced in 2002 with a sand filled artificial surface and it is planned to replace the sand filled surface with a hybrid surface, which is becoming the preferred surface for the sport.

To enable growth of the club and the sport in the City of Monash, the club will in the future need a second ground. The ground is well used throughout the year and games have to be moved to alternate locations through lack of space. In 2009 40% of our junior home matches had to be moved to alternative venues through lackof ground time at the Wverley Hockey Club. Having in excess of 500 Waverley Hockey Club players training each week at the venue does cause some management issues

Greater details on the club are located on our website www.waverleyhc.org.au
